How to repair or replace an M17 keel winch?
Hello, I figured some of you may have experience with this, per attached dropbox photos, my keel winch is coming apart and either needs to be repaired or replaced. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement winch or repair methods? I can jam it back together, and it will work somewhat, but it is now apparently missing some thing that holds the two halves of the winch body together. Thanks for any advice offered. Tyler, I wish I could help you, but I haven't had to tackle a broken winch. I did notice that your boat and mine might have been made the same day. Good luck with the winch. Looked at the drop box pictures. The top of those winches is usually held on with a split ring, which is a flat coiled spring that slips around the winch shaft and into a groove at the top of that shaft. Without that there is really no way to reasseble the winch safely. LIked the neck built up from the centerboartd trunk to the side of the winch. Does that work well for you? Tyler, It is just a small sheet winch. I found one at a nautical flea market for $50. I wouldn't try to jury rig that winch. If it let go you could cause a lot of damage to your centerboard well as well as the centerboard and your boat hull. tom B, MOnt 17 #258 On Tue, Aug 5, 2014 at 7:33 PM, Tyler Heerwagen via montgomery_boats < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

Tyler, I've been working on my winch that similar to yours. It is a Barlow. The cap screw and washer shown in your photo 4 should hold the top on. It fact it wholes the winch together. It looks like your top piece may have been damaged. Best, Ches Sugg On Aug 5, 2014, at 8:33 PM, Tyler Heerwagen via montgomery_boats wrote:

That winch is toast. The cap has sheered right off of the hub it is supposed to be attached to. As someone else said, you can buy good used winches that size all day long for pretty short money. Check ebay, Craigslist and local marine recyclers and consignment shops. Try to find one with as little plastic in it as possible.
