Fern Ridge Reservoir (Oregon) info for sailing later this month?
Hi all, I think there are a couple or more Monty owners here who are familiar with Fern Ridge reservoir just west of Eugene, Oregon? I'm thinking of bringing my M17 "Pajarita" up there for a couple days' sailing later this month. Maybe as soon as before and/or after next weekend, as I need to be in the area on the 12th for sure, and possibly 11th. So if anyone can point me to where to contact for launch, marina, short-term slips/buoys, and best options for those if there are several, I'd much appreciate it! Also any info about how the sailing is this time of year, and, can one sleep on one's boat at anchor or mooring. Sailing with other Montys there would be icing on the cake if this works out for my schedule... :-) thanks, John S. -- John Schinnerer - M.A., Whole Systems Design -------------------------------------------- - Eco-Living - Whole Systems Design Services People - Place - Learning - Integration john@eco-living.net - 510.982.1334 http://eco-living.net http://sociocracyconsulting.com
I used to sail out of Richardson Park Marina at Fern Ridge. They do have short term slip rentals and you can sleep on your boat at the slip or anchored out. Most of the lake is less than 20' deep so you can anchor any place you like. Winds are always good in the afternoons. Orchard Point is the other marina on the lake but I only used their facilities once and that was almost 20 years ago. It looks like you can make reservations on line through Lane Co. Parks http://reservations.lanecounty.org . I believe there are a few Montys on the lake with seasonal moorage at Richardson but I don't know the owners if they're even on this list. I'm no expert, but I'm a newbie learning on an M15 and I live about 10 miles away. Current weather conditions are here https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KORJUNCT6... There are 3 public boat ramps and there are slips available for rent. It seems I priced them at one time and I believe it was around $40 for a week. Parking isn't free. I want to say $4/day, but if you rent a slip, I believe parking is included so it makes it a better deal. http://www.lanecounty.org/departments/pw/parks/pages/lanecountyparksmarinamo... There is the eugene yacht club which has reciprocity with other yacht clubs. http://eugeneyachtclub.net/ Winds are pretty reliable, coming up around 12, and quitting around 7. If you look at the weather site link above, you can scroll back numerous days/weeks to see the history. Lake is about 20 feet deep. Send me an email if you get in the area. ________________________________ From: John Schinnerer <john@eco-living.net> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, September 3, 2016 5:42 PM Subject: M_Boats: Fern Ridge Reservoir (Oregon) info for sailing later this month? Fern Ridge Reservoir is a great lake for New sailors, big enough to learn on, but not so big it causes much trouble. I also recommend sailing lessons from an accredited sailing school or instructor. Possibly through the Eugene Parks Department or U.O Athletic Department, however, you may need to travel to Portland to Island Sailing Club or Willamette Sailing Club, but well worth the time and expense. What are the last 3 numbers on your hull identification? They are a clue to when your M-15 wads built. Also, make sure the Oregon DOL comprehends that your boat is a Montgomery, they want to put Montgomery Ward on the title and registration. I had my M-15 on Fern Ridge nearly 20 years ago before moving to Spokane and sailing on Lake Couer D' Alene, but now on South Puget Sound at Olympia. Mine ends in 485. It sure has been a fun boat. I'd love to take it to Puget Sound someday. Next steps are adding an electric panel and ladder. ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Trapp <stevetrapp@Q.com> To: Lawrence Winiarski <lawrence_winiarski@yahoo.com>; For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, September 4, 2016 11:19 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Fern Ridge Reservoir (Oregon) info for sailing later this month? Thanks all who provided the solid beta on Fern Ridge! Looks like I will be bringing Pajarita up there this coming Sunday (11th), and hauling out and heading home Wednesday (14th). So any of you in the area (Lawrence in particular you mentioned to let you know), If you want to meet up and sail, let me know. I'll most likely be in the Richardson park marina, as my buddy Keith (red Hobie Adventure Island tri) is going to drive up with his boat also and camp there and sail. We plan to sail all three afternoons at least, assuming there's wind. Other times as conditions allow, except Monday morning and early afternoon I am busy with some work near Eugene. While I'm there, number to reach me at is 510-457-5764. I probably won't be online much at all starting Sunday, since I'll be camping on the boat. If you can't get ahold of me by phone, just look for the M17 with the red hull! cheers, John S. On 09/04/2016 02:40 AM, Lawrence Winiarski via montgomery_boats wrote:

I have slept on my M-15 in September at Fern Ridge, and I advise closing the hatch and putting stuff in the cabin or lockers because it may rain any night this this time of year. However, my experience on Fern Ridge is nearly 20 years ago. I'd be a little concerned about the local cops trying to scam money for "illegal" overnight parking if you parked your trailer in "day use only" parking lot and anchored. I don't trust them. Seen a little unnecessary aggressive behavior by them the other week with a couple polite jet-skiers who were coming in at dusk (technically a violation) and just trying to load up and get home. Poor guys got held up for a good hour. I was worried I was going to attract their attention next as I was unrigging. I'd make sure and double check about where you can park overnight. ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Trapp <stevetrapp@Q.com> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, September 4, 2016 11:23 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Fern Ridge Reservoir (Oregon) info for sailing later thismonth?
