Just ordered the Garhauer mount for my M-17. I'll guess the stern on Tipperary is solid fiberglass. When I drill for the mount... Should I oversize the holes, epoxy and redrill to proper size or just drill the 'glass for the correct bolts? And, should I use a sealant? Thanks as usual for all answers. Bill
Billy I think your boat has a wood core on the stern. I suspect its balsa, but may be plywood. We use end grain balsa on the entire stern on the M_17. Use a nice size piece of plywood, with caulking, large area stainless washers and aircraft lock nuts. Garhauer is the best; its what we use. Fair winds Bob Eeg BILLAMICASR@aol.com wrote:

Mine is a '76 M17 & the stern isn't solid, it has a lumber core in the top 15" & from there down open, & has the o'board cutout. The area under the cutout is where the o'board mount goes, & is one layer of fiberglass. I mounted a 3/4" marine plywood backer coated w/ epoxy on the inside, and same on the outside, sized about 12" x 16", epoxied to each side of the transom. I don't think the fiberglass transom (1/4" +- thick ? ) is sturdy enough without at least one plywood backer. Maybe one each side is overkill, but it is solid. Then I oversized the mounting holes through the 2 backer panels and epoxied and redrilled, then used sealant.
