LAST CHANCE FOR GREAT SAILS! I already have one bid for the lot. Anyone else want them? Here is what I wrote in the May 12 listings: "My #361 came with main and jib by Pineapple, used twice, and a 505 spinnaker by North, used but very good. I am too far gone to fly a spinnaker, or properly appreciate new canvas, so they are all up for sale. $1,100 takes them all, including lines, pole, mast tracks and cars (latter all complete, I think and hope), you pay UPS (AND NO SALES TAX!). For complete and professional appraisal by a sailmaker (cost me $70), e-mail me off line and I'll send a copy of his full- page appraisal." John on Beaver Lake Do it now! You can’t do it any younger.
Is the jib a genoa? Maybe 130 percent or so? Thanks, Steve MacDonald On May 17, 2007, at 2:11 PM, John R. Butler wrote:

For those of you who miss out on this, I just installed the new set of Tan bark sails, for my M-17, that I order from Bill Tosh at TC Boats. Man I am so impressed at the power a new set of sails gives you. I had the original set circa 1974, I am looking for just as long a life on my new ones. Thanks Gilbert, I did contact Bill T and am trying to decide on what to replace my sails with. They are also original equip on my 75 M-17 and I am guessing they are pretty well done for. They do not seem to give me the upwind performance I think they should. I have what appears to be a fairly unused 170 but my question is this; Should I consider going with roller furling with the sail replacement? I would like to be able to single hand the boat and am looking at leading the lines to the cockpit. Any down side to the furling other than the $? Any way to alter the existing 170 to use with a furler or does the sail need to be custom made? Thanks in advance Robbin M-17 #56 ( I looked at how to read the hull number!) gilbert landin wrote:

Just picked up a Hood Seaflex furler for my M17 from Wayne Stevens at www.porpoisesailing.com in Sarasota FL. Seaflex may be a bit heavy duty for a Monty (includes a flexible extrusion that fits over existing head stay), but better too strong than too weak. Wayne can modify your existing sail for use with the furler, order you a new one, or he has sails in stock that will fit the furler and almost any boat you have. Wayne is the best -- sailed all over the world, Knows sails and boats. Robbin, I bought a CDI roller furler from Sailnet 3 years ago. I single hand exclusively. Due to the limited space in the fore deck, it has been way easier with a furler. I ordered a new fore stay from jerry, sent him pictures and measurements and it came back perfect. I could have used the same one but I wanted it to be perfect, and it was. I had the local sailshop add a number 6 luff tape to my 130 and it has been fine. I sailed my first race this weekend and everybody was commenting on the maroon sails (tanbark) now everybody knows what a Montgomery looks like. Yes there was quite a difference in the handling with new stiff sails. I had 1 reef and jib rolled up to 100% the winds were at 25 knots gusting to just under 30, I was out for about 4 hours, and I never felt overpowered. I did however, had pretty white knuckles and a bad case of fiberglass butt since the cushions kept slipping away. Just a tip for ordering sails, if you can send in the old ones so they can be cut accordingly. I will add a headboard and slugs to my new sail, I will welcome the challenge since I fancy myself somewhat of a hobbist. I love the 6.5 oz Dacron, nice and heavy I needed that this weekend. PS I did not finish the race, I thought I would follow the other boats, not realizing how slow by boat is. After the second mark I was the only sail out, and I was completely lost as to where the marks were. Oh well I learned about programming the GPS and a couple of other things. gil -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+gilbert.landin=gmail.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+gilbert.landin=gmail.com@mailman.xmission.c om] On Behalf Of Robbin Roddewig Sent: Monday, May 21, 2007 6:05 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: M_Boats: roller furling? I have a CDI roller reefing headsail on my M17 and I like it a lot. Boat points well with it. The only down side other than cost is that it takes a little for effort to step the mast because of the added weight. Except at the end of the season I leave the sail on the forestay when trailering. --Gary Hyde Pullman, WA gmhyde1@mac.com M17 sailboat #637 'Hydeaway 2' We can't change the wind, but we can trim our sails.
