My M15 centerboard pin almost fell out!
Hello all, I took my M15 "Shaolin" out for first sail of the season in the Sandy Hook bay area (by NJ). We had a great time on the water and did some beach hopping. I encountered two major issues. 1) My Honda 2hp is burning oil and start to smoke badly when I ramp up the RPM. We had to shut it off to let it cool before turning it back on again. It worked fine afterwards in speed just above idle, we cruised at 2 knots or so with the motor all afternoon. Any ideas on what could be causing the oil burn? Oil also leaks out of the exhaust pipe if I ramp up the engine. 2) My centerboard pin almost fell out. After I towed the boat out of the water, I saw that the centerboard pin is stuck out way on one side. I could push it mostly back in with just hand force. I don't want is to sail along and have my centerboard fall out on me next time we go out. I'd appreciate any idea or suggestions on these two problems. Thanks! Donglai "Shaolin" M15 #612
Donglai, I was having the same problem last year with my M17... Jerry's first recommendation was to whip up some epoxy and spread that around the pin on both sides (goop up one side, hammer it over to the other side to goop it up also and then line it up flush) and let it dry for a day or two. I believe this "thickens" the pin and keeps it where it belongs. If that doesn't work (and it worked for me so far) then you probably need to replace the pin. He said that you have to knock the new one in while knocking the old one out... I am sure there is a trick to that as the centerboard may want to fall somewhere in there. I guess if i were to do that i would hammer hard and fast to make sure the hole stayed lined up throughout... perhaps there is another trick to this... But i would try the epoxy fix first... it worked for me (so far)! Donglai, The pin on my CB kept coming out - I tried epoxy, and 5200 and still lost a CB because I forget to check it. The pin in mine was flush to both sides of the exterior keel. The orginal pin was recessed slightly and you could not tell where it was. I cut 1/4 inch off the pin so that it was recessed and the new epoxy has held for 3 years now. I new it was caused by the trailer vibrations but I never associated the loosing of the pin with the tires. I have stayed with the non-radial tires. Thank you all for the helpful responses! I think I know how to deal with both issues now. Regards, Donglai On 4/23/07, Donglai Gong <coolskipper@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi When are you planning to go again? Maybe we can get together. Any ramp around there? Orlando Velez M15 #266 Donglai Gong <coolskipper@gmail.com> wrote: Thank you all for the helpful responses! I think I know how to deal with both issues now. Regards, Donglai On 4/23/07, Donglai Gong wrote:

Hi, I hope to go whenever the next good weather window comes, but not this weekend. It'll be cool to go out together. I launched out of Atlantic Highlands Marina at the end of First Ave. The ramp fee weren't cheap, $24. The water is still kinda cold, having a wader helped. Does not look good this weekend some rain and temperature still low. Did you solve the pin problem?
