I went for ride once on a 15 with a 2 hp Honda, and was impressed by what a great job it did.  I don't remember it dragging on the stbd tack, and it seems like I would remember something like that. 

 

Twice, I extended the length of the bracket so that it would fit more motors; once soon after first building the 15, and again when I retooled the 17 and made a slightly larger bracket for it.

 

The bracket can be shimmed out, both with a thicker pad (if there is room for it and still get the motor on), and with teak shims between the bracket and the transom.  Might not take much to get it to clear.

I've used a Honda 5HP on my M15, and it's way too much. Haven't used my Honda 2HP yet (it's primarily a motor for Moby Dink, my deflateable dinghy), but that's the one that will be going on there. I'm sure that they've fixed it now, but didn't B&S outboards have a terrible reputation for corroding into uselessness remarkably quickly?

Sorry if this is off topic and I know this subject gets totally hashed but I am in the market for a 4 stroke outboard for my M15 and need to know the transom height or how to measure it. My boat is an 89 model with the fixed motor mount.

I know that the Honda 2hp is all I need and is the bomb BUT, Stockdale Marine has a Briggs & Stratton 5hp for less $$ AND it has neutral, forward and reverse AND an external tank so I can cruise the river all day if no wind.
