It would be very interesting indeed if all of Bob's customers were to reply honestly and without fear of retribution to questions like:
1. Was your boat delivered on time? 2. If your boat was not delivered on time, how much time elapsed between the promised delivery date and the actual delivery date? 3. If it was not delivered on time, were there changes you requested during the build process that might have extended the delivery date? 4. Was the quality of the boat higher, lower, or as expected, based upon the builder's descriptions and comparison to previously delivered boats? 5. If there were quality issues, were they resolved by the builder in a timely manner? 6. Would you do business with this builder again? 7. Could you recommend this builder to your best friend?
And it would be interesting to know if Precision's, Com-pac's, International Marine's, and other boatbuilder's customers would answer similarly.
I think these are fair questions.
Should a builder's business practices be a secret? Or should they be openly known?
Does the answer to those questions depend upon what those business practices are? Why?
If I were a potential customer, I would certainly want to know the answers to those first seven questions.
Certainly the builder shouldn't fear the answers. If he does, then that is very telling.
The people doing the answering shouldn't break out in a sweat and wonder if they should consult an attorney before answering. If they do, then that too is very telling.
