Regarding the goo, you might try mineral spirits. Acetone is a little on the hot side, as a solvent, and most probably will eat into the sheen of the finish. Now that you've moved into the Montgomery family, why not make it to the CBC 2003? Glad to hear that things are going well and you are eagerly anticipating your first sail.
It takes a trip or two to get things sorted out, but as a former big boat sailor, you know that the pointy end is called the bow; the blunt end is called the stern, and you know about things like shrouds and sheets.
I use lighter fluid to get the goo off the hull; I've also tried acetone. Usually lighter fluid and some time works.
Another product that you might want to try is called "GOO GONE", which promises miracles, etc.
