Hi: I bought ae Dwyer boom vang 3:1 kit (Model DK 301) for my M17. I comes with the hardware for both ends and cost considerably less than other vangs that didn't include the hardware. The key slot fitting attaches to the boom and the ball on the end of the cable fits in that. Then the mast end consists of an eye strap mounted low on the FRONT of the mast and a piece of rope that goes thru the eye strap, around the mast, and thru a small block attached to the fiddle block- wedge cleat assembly. It works OK and cost $85 plus shipping. You can check out Dwyer's site at: https://www.dwyermast.com/items.asp? cat1ID=50&cat1Name=Rigging&familyID=12&familyName=Boom+Vangs --Gary Hyde Pullman, WA gmhyde1@mac.com M17 #637 'Hydeaway 2' "...There's nothing quite like messing about in boats..." Yeah, the key only works on the boom. The Dwyer set up is made for a swaged ball which I guess you would have to supply for yourself out of wire. The similar Laser device has a curved key that looks like a bent clevis pin with a big head which you shackle to the boom end of the vang. It won't slip out since the entire assemble hangs from it. George,
On second thought, I can see that the vang key assembly would not be a good idea for the mast end of the vang. Besides wanting to fall down and out of the slot, the vang should probably be hooked hard to the boat at least at one end or it will eventually end up in the drink.
