Hey Bill, There is an inspection hole/cover on the inside cockpit area of my M17 to allow access to the transom. Thus, installing a backing plate was easy. I have an earlier M17 without the wet locker. I think the minimum size motor for the M23 would be a 8hp. I did use an older Johnson 6hp 2 stroke on my M17 for a number of years. It was OK, but idled poorly and was a rather dirty motor dumping gas in the lake. Not the "green" approach. Love the newer Yamaha 4 on the M17.
