You're absolutely right Dave. In 49 years of cruising in various sized boats I've never used all chain rode and I've never had an issue. However, I do like to experiment with stuff. It gives me another excuse to mess about in boats.
When setting up a new anchor I normally run about 7x the bow freeboard in chain. That way I never have to add freeboard to water depth when paying out the nylon. New England Ropes 3 strand has much better chafe resistance than the hardware store stuff (according to me).

Jim.
You don't need 100' of chain for a Mboat. Get 20' if chain and get 200' of three-strand to make your rode.
For buying chain as long as the strength and metal type certificates can be confirmed get it at the best price.

Fellow Monties;
So West Marine sells 100' of grade 30 1/4" hot dip galvanized proof coil chain for around $400 but I can buy what appears to be the same stuff at Home Depot for about $200 and online for less than that all day long. What am I missing?
