On doing a bit more research (the heavy lifting of googling electric brakes on boat trailer) I found a review which appears to counter the guy at the counter at the Trailer Superstore.... http://www.redtrailers.com/ShowArticle.asp?id=2 , which finishes by saying that if rebuilding a boat trailer go electric. Hmmm Now I really have to get back to work ... soon Robbin On 9/29/2011 2:34 PM, robbin roddewig wrote:
Gil, man where did you get so smart (or is it where did I get so dumb?)! Your folksy wisdom of electric in water struck a chord (banjo chord I think) and I called the folks at Trailer Superstore. They said that the electrics have been done by some in fresh water but that in salt water like we have in these parts it would eat the magnet away in little time. So while I would not electrify the Chesapeake Bay by backing my electric brakes in the pond it sounds like Hydraulic is the way to go. And the assemblies I am looking at are all "free backing". They must be related to Greek banks! Gotta get back to what they pay more for...

In the past I wondered - who 'invented' the underwater swimming pool electric light fixture (pre GFCI- if that will protect you?) AND electric brakes for boat trailers that are immersed in salt and freshwater?
I would spend the $ on hydraulic disc brakes - make sure they are installed on the proper axle. (fiber optics for the pool light is a better option)
Not a good idea to rely on the F-350's brakes only. It would be a bad idea and most likely illegal too. Hate it when the insurance company 'skates' because we forgot some technicality!
Still wondering....'bout many things. GO _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats
