Thanks for the tip, good ideas to keep in mind. Ideally I'll try the stock gudgeons first but good to have an option to improve the action. In particular I don't want to R&R the bottom one since it's in the water most of the time. Are the transom mounting holes an exact match on the Catalina gudgeons, or did you have to re-do the bottom one (fill & drill)? I am hull #38, very close! cheers, John S. I did the same replacement on our M17 a few years ago and bought the gudgeons for the Catalina 25 which are sized for a half inch rod and have delrin inserts that provide smooth action. They are built well and I recommend them as an option. Our hull number was 32 from 1974 with the sane two gudgeon setup. I also made anew nacra foil rudder from scatch with laminated mahogony.
