Hi Bill! Your story about the V-8 in Skunk reminds me of the irate phone call I got, about 30 years ago, from some guy in Oklahoma who put a big outboard (like 40 or 50 HP) on a 17. The first thing that he was angry about was that he had to cut out part of the transom to fit the motor, and the second was that it still wouldn't plane! ("The damned thing still won't go over 10 MPH)". He also complained that he could hear cracking sounds when he cranked the motor up. Oh well. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Ahrens" <billahrens@comcast.net> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, April 09, 2012 9:12 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: M23 'Windward Skunk' Just finished research about "Windward Skunk". There were two Windward Skunks. The first was built by Jerry for Tom VanAtta in the 70's. It was a 17 flush deck. Tom sailed it for some time, then sold it to Bob Carlson who sailed it in Mexico, AZ and New Mexico. In the late 80's Bob sold it to some body else in Tucson. The guy was converting it to a fishing boat, maybe with a big V8 in it. Trail ends there. Maybe somebody else knows. The second Skunk was bought from Stan by Tom VanAtta. Suspect the name was Wrinkle the Wonder Boat. Tom had the boat painted in the black/white scheme and renamed the boat Windward Skunk. He sailed it for several years in Mexico Races. He eventually sold it, and it ended up with Martin Pepper also in Tucson. Another guy in the Tucson Sailing Club is in the process of buying it. He will put it back into service. according to my source, a long time M17 sailor in AZ and Mexico, she remains in AZ (can't remember the city).
owner started a refit and modifications to make her a cruising boat.
refit has been 'stalled' for about 10 years.
the boat is 'somewhat' for sale. price is high for her condition and that she is racing boat with little space or comfort one would want for a cruising 23 foot boat.
for those not aware 'Windward Skunk' is an M23 with a modified keel ... yes she is a Stan 'paintboy' Susman creation ... M15 cockpit and house, flush deck and has her top 'lapstrake' removed (less freeboard than the other 19(ish) M23s).
