When I got my used Montgomery 15 the battery was essentially loose rattling around in the front compartment. This had turned the styrofoam in the compartment into a sort of gravel, so it must have been that way for a long time. I put the battery into a plastic battery box secured in the compartment and have driven thousands of miles that way. The bottom of the boat shows no damage from the battery after all this.
