Those wrinkles do make the NS and the Montys somewhat similar. After I sold my NorSea and bought my M17 one of the locals down at the marina said "Hey Look! Now we know why Joe hardly sails his boat. He finally took it out and the damn thing shrunk!" If I might chime in on a subject I know something about, I also read the Wixom article, and found that my Nor'Sea also heaves-to quite nicely without a jib (not a surprise, of course). This is handy for changing jibs in awful conditions. I have never tried to park the boat without a jib in light air, so I don't know if it will work. Sorry to go on about a NS in a Montgomery site, but I assume that the Lyell Hess designs have some common functional properties despite their diversity in appearance.

Hi David,
Thanks for all the insight into the M17 achieving a "hoven state". (is that a correct word?) Years ago, I read a NorSea newsletter written by Dean Wixom, (Herritage Marine), in which he stated disregard everything you know about heaving to when it comes to the NS27, a jib is not employed, the condition is achieved with the main sail alone. If I'm ever aboard an NS27 again in sporty wind conditions, I'd like to try it. Keep your posts coming!
Thanks,
Bones
