once you use silicone it's very iffy to try to get paint to stick to the deck in the future (or bond something to it) if you every need some touchup or repair done. Use a polyurethane like 5200 or boatlife, and actually the cartridges that you can buy at Home Depot work just fine. We use to use silicone to bed the windows because it's available in clear and is much easier to clean up the excess; PU takes a lot more scrubbing which dulls the finish on the plastic windows. I have often heard that using silicone to bed deck hardware and ports on fiberglass boats is not a good thing to do. Recently on this site Bob Eeg also made that point. What is the thinking behind that? I know several people who have worked in boat building factories (Compac, Hunter, and Irwin to name just three) who recommend and use silicone for bedding hardware on their own boats. Beckson Ports specifies silicone for bedding their ports.
