What I meant by uneventful was how easy it was to just get up and go. Those days, I was young and stupid, fearless and adventurous at the same time. I had a somewhat out-of-date Cruising Guide to the Bahamas, Crusing Guide to the Greater Antilles, Reed's Nautical Almanac, and --the most useful publication-- The Gentlemen's Guide to Passage South (subtitle: The Thornless Path to Windward) by Bruce Van Sant. My brother-in-law towed the boat to W. Palm with his Ford Ranger and we launched at some local ramp. He said "good-bye and good luck ya'", and I was gone. I was pretty good at celestial navigation only because I couldn't afford loran, and GPS was still with the military. So, it was a cheap Davis sextant and a Casio stopwatch. Oh, and an excellant Ritchie compass. I shaped a course across the Gulf Stream towards Gun Cay. As I recall, it was my birthday, which was just coincidence. I planned the sail for February ahead of the storm season and hoped to catch a cold front to push me and the boat south. Okay, everyone's got a plan that won't work. I beat to weather the whole trip--took about 45 days. It was easy to catch rain water and not so easy to catch fish. I met a number of strange and not-so-strange people on the way down, including David Crosby.
