Nick, The original traveler on my M17 was about 6" behind the companionway, like yours. Big hassle to move if you had anyone else sailing with you, as you needed to reach past their legs to make adjustments. When I replaced it with a Harken track and a windward sheeting car I moved it back another 13". That's not quite as far as the newer boats, but works out well, giving room in front for your passengers legs, but also leaving you room to cross the cockpit between the mainsheet and the tiller without having to raise the tiller out of the way. I'm working my way down the list of things to fix or upgrade on my M-17, and the traveler is the next thing on the "buy parts" list. My existing traveler is semi-functional and is mounted just aft of the cabin hatch. So the question I would like to pose to the group concerns placement: should I put the new traveler back in the same area or mount it mid-cockpit? I see on the photos site that some travelers are mid-cockpit -- is that the way it is on the newer boats? For those that have relocated the track aft do you have regrets?
