I like your idea about using a lower hatchboard with holders for radio,gps, maybe binocs, etc., but wonder if you couldn't do it with the lower of 2 boards, rather than creating 3. If you positioned the holders far enough from the lower edge, you could reverse the hatchboard when not sailing. Of course, the bevel on the lower edge of the top board and the upper edge of the bottom board would have to be more like a "V" shape than a simple 45-degree bevel to shed water.
