I'm sure somebody will enumerate the reasons a topping lift is a good idea, Tom, but to add a personal wrinkle, I also use a short bit of line (8 inches?) with clips at both ends to secure the boom when the boat is at rest. Connects to the plate that splits the backstay then to the end of the boom. Works well if you don't want the boom to swing (be sure to disconnect prior to raising the main...) like when you rig a sun or rain shade. t On Tue, Jul 26, 2011 at 11:07 AM, Tom Frei <tom.frei@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi all. I'm a new owner of an 1981 M17. Works great. But I have a question about a topping lift. Should I have one? It is currently rigged without, but that is because I just rigged it the way the previous owner rigged the mast.
Seems to me there is no reason not to have one. It would certainly keep the boom up when lowering and reefing the main. Am I right?
