Not sure what was used (or how long ago) on mine to apply the red over the tangerine-orange original. It seems to stick darn well. I'm guessing it was a two-part epoxy paint and professionally done. There is some kind of primer or base layer between the original tangerine and the red. And, there were some surface fill repairs done in places, like dings in the gelcoat or scrapes from something or both, that were sprayed, with something that faded out quite a bit since I got her. It's not auto primer, but it ends up looking like that reddish auto primer color as it fades. A light wet-sanding with some fairly worn-out 400 wet-or-dry (or maybe some new 600 :-) takes it off reasonably well. cheers, John S. On 11/07/2017 10:32 AM, Dave Scobie wrote:
Many of the 70s M17s were in the popular base color red/green/blue/yellow. as the years went by fewer were we 'colored' and more were made in a light cream.
Better if it wasn't painted over the original gel coat. The modern paints are really good but they are less flexible than gel coat and fiberglass. very easily chipped and for a trailerable boat this is a problem. Had a green M15 that was painted ...chipping was TERRIBLE!

Does anyone know if any M boats were manufactured with colored gel coat? I've seen a green hull, and was curious if that was factory or painted.
thx a
