My reason for doing it this way was: - I had good compass visibility while sitting on either cockpit seat: it was on the boat's centerline - There was nothing protruding from the aft cabin bulkhead when you wanted to lean there and relax. - It was easy to stow down below when we left the boat - Since it was under the teak board located in front of the companionway, there was very little danger of stepping on it. - We lived with that arrangement for as long as we owned our M15. It worked to our satisfaction. Connie ex M15 #400 LEPPO
I mounted a Plastimo 100 in the center of the sliding cabin top on my 18 ft Sandpiper. It is easily visible from either tack and can be quickley removed to lower/raise the mast or use as a handheld. This keeps the bulkhead clean for relaxation.

Where is the best location for mounting a compass on a Montgomery 17? Type? We are thinking about a bulk head dual read card compass. At our local lake there is a Seaward Fox that has a compass on the port and starboard bulk head.
