I own a 1983 Montgomery 15. Last summer was my first time using the boat due to the pandemic and some other health issues but I did manage to launch and keep at a dock on Lake Pymatuning (OH/PA border) from August to September. Apparently the boat was always dry sailed, and never had anti fouling paint applied as the bottom was clean when I bought it almost three years ago. When I hauled it out (dumb me) there was algae on the bottom. I was able to get it pretty clean using a marine algae cleaner and powerwasher but I'll give it another hit in the spring. As I was powerwashing, I seem to have removed a 3" section of fiberglass from the fin keel, forward on the port side. Looks like exposed metal. Is this lead or steel? Can't see well in there. How should it be fixed/patched? I really don't want to apply anti-fouling paint and will dry sail after I modify the trailer with keel guides and slicker beds to make launch and recovery easier. Any suggestions on repair and trailer mods are appreciated. Thanks Rimantas "Ray" Aukstuolis

Erasing Age Lines

Well, it was a long time in coming but it was definitely worth the wait. Ten years ago I stumbled across a rare M-5’8”. It was severely abused and needed lots of love. I had visions of restoring this little gem and came to the conclusion this project was going to be challenging. If I were to be successful with this restoration, I would need to use my ultimate multi-purpose tool. It can fix anything with ease. So I broke out my checkbook and took the little pram to a professional. This past weekend I picked up my renewed boat! The only problem I discovered..….the Chesapeake Bay and it's tributaries are so dirty, I’m not sure I want to place my new boat in such murky water! It would be an absolute shame to get this little gem dirty. 🤣 I’ve attached a few before and after pictures. My goal was to restored the pram to match my M-15. I plan to tow the pram behind me when I’m out for long weekends. I’m sure there’ll be a learning curve figuring out how best to tow the pram and transitioning between the two. Hello, I’m not sure how many Montgomery 23 owners are using this list, but I was curious what outboards you use. I’ve been using an 8 hp 2-stroke with 25” shaft, but I can’t find an 8hp 4-stroke with the 25” shaft. Obviously, no one makes a 2-stroke any more. Hi Gerry and Listers, I always removed the outboard when I transported Dhana or my M17, Bonita. The Mariner 8hp, or, my older Honda BF10 weighed around 75 lbs so it was manageable to mount with one other person. The newer 4 stroke outboards are of course, much heavier. I have heard good reviews of the Yamaha high thrust 8hp. I have seen them mounted on Flickas. I had a chance to sail a Flicka briefly years ago, but, there was not much wind. I could not get a good feel for how she performed. I was more drawn to her big sister, the mighty Dana 24. Almost bought one to replace my M23. But, alas, I could not part with my lovely wrinkleboat. My 2 cents. Mr. Bones

Good Show Gerry, Along with the added performance of the new mast, a new outboard will be delightful. I just upgraded my fishing boat to a 2015 Alumacraft 165 Classic. I'm still sailing with friends, but do more fishing than trimming sheets! All the best to you and your family. Dhana found a great home with you. B.

I use a 6hp Yamaha long shaft on my wooden Picaroon, weighing 2000lbs. Best thing I’ve done for power on this boat (have owned her since 1977). Combing repair tips / materials?

I sailed too long on take-out day, got tired and dropped the rudder on the combing, which took a nice chunk out of the, just forward of the main winch. About 3" x 0.5", through the topmost layer. I really want to do the old boat right, when I patch it up this spring. Can any of you point me to the right materials, docs on proper technique, etc? She's been stored dry and covered all winter. Sacrificial zinc on M17?

If so where?
