I own a 1983 Montgomery 15. Last summer was my first time using the boat due to the pandemic and some other health issues but I did manage to launch and keep at a dock on Lake Pymatuning (OH/PA border) from August to September. Apparently the boat was always dry sailed, and never had anti fouling paint applied as the bottom was clean when I bought it almost three years ago. When I hauled it out (dumb me) there was algae on the bottom. I was able to get it pretty clean using a marine algae cleaner and powerwasher but I'll give it another hit in the spring. As I was powerwashing, I seem to have removed a 3" section of fiberglass from the fin keel, forward on the port side. Looks like exposed metal. Is this lead or steel? Can't see well in there. How should it be fixed/patched? I really don't want to apply anti-fouling paint and will dry sail after I modify the trailer with keel guides and slicker beds to make launch and recovery easier. Any suggestions on repair and trailer mods are appreciated. Thanks Rimantas "Ray" Aukstuolis

Ann: I recommend - Remove the pan. It looks janky. Show the boat without it present. Clean up the area under the cockpit. Vac, scrub, etc. Better would be to paint with Interlux BilgeCoat. Follow prep as outlined on the can. Make sure the edge, from cutting out the pan, isn't sharp. If need sand away edge and burrs with 120g sandpaper. Don't sand the shiny visible bits of gel coat at the edge, just round off any sharps. M15 Stay and Shroud lengths

The guy who actually did the work on the bottom paint stopped by the marina today and he told us that after they replaced the pin, They covered it with three layers of glass cloth and resin so it’s hard to imagine water coming in that way. What it would be really helpful to have is a drawing that shows a cross-section of the entire keel/trunk/bilge from a fore and aft direction, As well as athwartship. I’m particularly interested in knowing where there might be wood. Given the way the pin was replaced, it’s really hard to Fathom where the water might be getting in and how it is getting past the ballast and the resin. I did Jerry’s tap test and everything sounds like it should. My plan at this point is to plug the crack with boat life right now Just to confirm that that is the problem. If it stops the water accumulation, then I will know what the problem is. It can be removed when I haul to fix. My fiberglass guy will be back in 10 days and I will have him take a look at it and come up with a plan at that point. If I can continue to use the boat until he is ready to fix it, that would be a bonus. So Jerry, any construction-drawings that you might have that would help my fiberglass guy and myself trace the water path, that would be great. And hopefully we can also get them from Barb since he built this actual boat. First sailboat!

I ran across this old photo recently and thought I'd share it with you. I told you I'm an old-timer about sailing. This is my friend Paul and I sailing a raft we made at Little Cultis Lake in the Cascade Mountains in E. OR, near Bend, OR. I'm the good-looking one doing the sail trim; Paul is at the helm. The photo is from the summer of 1950 so I would have been nine or ten years old. Paul, being a year younger, was obviously just a little kid. We never gave a thought that the raft might not do well upwind so we sailed across the lake and it was a long walk back. Yes, we got in trouble. Paul and I still sail, hunt, and fish together, still lots of time sitting around a campfire telling lies. We did the regatta at Whiskey Town Lake just before covid; we didn't win that one but had a great time, which couldn't be helped.

I've looked at all my flash and hard drives. Can't find the document with the M15 shrouds details. I do remember that the early boats have shrouds and forestay of equal lengths. Jerry stopped doing this as folks would set the mast straight so without enough rake (need at least 3-4"). He then built the boats with the forestay a bit longer and the shrouds a bit shorter 'to encourage the correct rake'. Some new takes on MOB recovery

Interesting article on MOB recovery and some new techniques being used & taught. Based on what sounds like a lot of analysis of actual incidents. https://www.uksailmakers.com/news/2022/4/19/new-thoughts-in-mob-recovery Mostly shows quite big boats in the videos, and talks about switching to motor power for the maneuvers. However the concepts could be useful for much smaller boats, including without motors. Montys have round hulls, but for example a Potter 19 has the kind of hard chines they mention as being a danger to an MOB when trying to pull up close to them. The life-sling as throw line could translate to just having a river paddling throw line aboard. A throw line is a basic must-have rescue item for whitewater paddling, where often the rescuing boat or person can't get right to where the line is needed, but it can be thrown. The idea of towing the rescue line or sling in a circle around the MOB - the way a ski boat brings the tow line back to the person in the water - just seems so obvious it's amazing it's a "new" idea for MOB (I water skied a bit decades ago but I never thought of applying it to MOB rescues). Much easier than trying to get right to the person, especially in intense conditions where an MOB is more likely, and harder to rescue. Even a motorless sailboat can likely sail a small enough arc around the MOB to get the line to them. More easily than trying to pull right up to them anyhow. And on smaller boats (especially with swim ladders) - might not need to be able to hoist the whole person out, just need to get them to a safe re-boarding position on the boat. Then one missing piece here is how would that last part (hoisting them out) get implemented on multihulls. They mention the dangers of whacking the MOB with hull edge (cat) or 'ama (tri) if attempting to pull right up to them, but the bit about hoisting the MOB would NOT work the same as shown for monohulls.
