Gerry: For some reason I am not seeing your e-mails directly. Nonetheless, I saw Connie's reply and, as a New England M17 sailor, I will add a little to what he said. First, an M17 is very capable of handling anything you are likely to encounter in coastal cruising around here this time of year. Just keep an eye on the weather forecasts for tropical systems or so-called Nor'easters (rare in summer). You also have to pay more attention to tides and currents than you may be used to. North of Cape Cod we have 10 foot tides and they only get bigger as you go further north (or downeast, as they like to say in Maine). South of the Cape, the tides are modest but there are significant currents in all the sounds. Sailing with the tides and the currents is a joy, but trying to buck them in a sailboat the size of an M17 is frustrating at best and dangerous at worst. As Connie mentioned, you want to get the Eldridge Guide for this. Ditto for sea state. In my experience, the M17 just does not have the heft needed to beat into steep waves and trying to do so is hard on the boat and the crew. You can compensate by taking the waves more on the beam, but then you aren't covering much ground to windward. Choose your destination accordingly. Connie already mentioned fog and I will add that even without fog there may be times when you are out of sight of land for a while. If you do not already have one, you probably will want to get a GPS device to supplement your compass and your charts. As far as destinations, there are lots of good ones but I will only mention a couple. Penobscot Bay is pretty much the holy grail of New England sailing and you can't go wrong exploring the many islands, sounds and harbors there. I also recommend the islands south of the Cape: Block, Cuttyhunk, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Especially on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket the M17's shallow draft will allow you to access some lovely ponds and bays that bigger boats rarely attempt. For lack of time, I do almost all my sailing these days in the relatively protected waters of Duxbury Bay, Kingston Bay and Plymouth Harbor. I am always looking for crew if that interests you.

I just placed the add on Thursday night, and by early Friday morning a guy already wanted to come by to buy the boat. I couldn’t be available last night, but he is on his way with money right now. In the meantime there are like 7 other people interested in the boat too. These Monty’s are popular! I must have underpriced it, but it doesn’t matter. I hope the boat gets lots of use. Such a great boat. I am shedding a tear already… But I got lots of work done on my SCAMP today, so fair winds in the future. Daniel Kestrel #208

I just heard that Kestral is for sale. I am the previous owner, and had her from 6/30/94, until I sold her to Dan in 2011(?), due to health considerations. She is a really good boat. I sailed her in San Francisco Bay and occasionally in Monterey Bay, and whatever dumb thing I did, she always came through for me. Fun to sail, great single-handed sail, safe and dependable. Don’t be concerned about her age, she still has many more years in her, and the price is a real bargain. Yes, I really miss sailing her, but she gave me wonderful memories. Give her another good home. Bob Becker

Centerboard line attachment, Montgomery 15

Hello, I have a 2002 Montgomery 15. Has anyone had to replace the line to their centerboard? I thought this would be easy, but I don't see how to get to it. A squirrel chewed through the line at deck level. The boat was on the trailer so the centerboard did not drop. There is a wood step in the way across the hatch entrance with a hole where the line ran through. I don't see any easy way to remove this either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Steve

Hi all, Just in case anyone here is in the vicinity and wants to rendezvous - I am taking "Pajarita," my M17, to Waldo lake Thursday, coming back Monday. If you are in the trailer-sailor vicinity and haven't been there, it's a treat - no gas motors allowed for one thing! Just sail, paddle, row; also, electric motors are OK, but seldom see them, the lake is ultraoligotrophic (having extremely clear water with very little organic material) so not much of a fishing lake. Used to be stocked but that stopped in 1990. Gas motors were banned in 2010. There are three road access campgrounds on the east side; trail & boat access only on south west and north sides. Shore camping spots here and there along the west shore for the most part. North end had a fire some years ago and is still burned over looking. Best ramp in recent years is at North Waldo campground. Shadow Bay (south end) is somewhat off-kilter/broken up below water, and Islet point ramp also. I will be going across to anchor in the bay behind Rhododendron island. Other than Shadow bay and North campground launch ramp bay, that is about the only really sheltered anchorage. Hi Brad (and all,) I’m curious about your comments regarding comparing Scamp accommodations to the M-15. Speaking with some experience after doing the Salish 100, the M-15 cabin sucks(!) for anything but actually sleeping. Without sitting headroom it’s functionally useless until it’s time for bed. By comparison, all the Scamps on the cruise had cockpit covers giving them a huge area to hang out in, completely protected from the weather. Granted, it took a while for them to set up the cover, (and it looked like a pain to do), but it looked really cozy and snug once they were up. We had fantastic weather on the cruise so they weren’t setting up in a wet cockpit though, so that is certainly a consideration. But I think each boat has its compromises and advantages. I almost always day sail, and may only cruise once a year, so I’ve been thinking about downsizing to a Scamp, but I haven’t decided yet. It is a compelling design, but I just don’t know yet if I want to accept its compromises over my M-15 or not. Time will tell! Maybe I’ll have both for a season and decide then.
