Intentional Capsize for M15

Hi M sailors, I've been watching a few videos about the SCAMP, which is a small wooden boat designed by John Welsford. Seems to be a very stable boat and they did an interesting Intentional Capsize with the boat to judge stability, safety, and self-rescue. I'm sure many of you may have seen the short videos - if not, here are a couple links for reference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du9lvJNVqnk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRZNWAkdkXM My question as an M15 owner is if this type of test or intentional capsize and recovery has been done on an M15 or M17 or similar boats? I would suspect it would be much harder to intentionally capsize an M17, but an M15 seems like this test could be done. I come from a dinghy sailing background where capsizes are part of the experience and sure adds to your confidence when you know what will happen in a capsize and that you can recover as needed. So that is what got me thinking along these lines. I know I've read that capsizes and knockdowns are very rare for M15s but thought this may be a good summer time type of test/experiment. If not done intentionally, any stories of capsizes and recovery out there? I read the one on msog.org, but hadn't heard of any others. Hi John, Good eye to notice that...The rig on the bow pulpit is a mystery to me. It is a winch with rope. When I bought the boat, it was there and I have no idea what the previous owner used it for. I've thought it might be for mast raising. He was an older gentlemen so he may have needed help in that regard, but for me, it is so easy raising the mast on the M15 I haven't needed it. I also thought maybe it was for anchor retrieval as well. I've been thinking of just taking it off, even though it doesn't bother me and doesn't affect sailing. Your guess is as good as mine. Cockpit drains

All, My M-17 (#359) cockpit drains are routed from the fuel tank locker through hoses internal to the boat to exit underwater through aluminum through hull stub connections. The aluminum stubs are a bit corroded, but don’t appear to be unsafe, but I am considering modification to avoid the inevitable problem of leakage due to the corrosion. More recent builds have the cockpit drains located in the transom, about 3 inches above the waterline, about a foot port and starboard of centerline, through what appear to be Marelon thru hulls. On the MSOG site, Bob Eeg mentions using Whale check valves to prevent back flow into the fuel tank locker. Has anyone done this modification, and if so, are there “lessons learned” that I should be aware of? I’ve a bit of experience doing fiberglass hull repair (closing holes and openings that are no longer needed due to configuration changes with West System. Thanks. Will

M-Boats: Cockpit drains

On my Monty 17 #258 I added 2- 1.5 inch cockpit drains modeled in location after the ones installed on new Monties being built. I was going to go with some sort of backflow check but found them to be expensive so used a Blue Sea system flapper valve that screws over the transom end of the drain pipe after it pierces the transom above the waterline. They are inexpensive and have served well to stop water from sluicing back into the cockpit. I made sure they exited above the waterline to avoid water flowing back into the cockpit when the cockpit had three or four people in it. I was able to find regular PVC fittings for the 1 1/2 diameter pipe that were a slip type on one end while the other end was threaded for a 1 1/2 inch pipe thread. This allowed screwing a female PVC fitting over the male thread as a nut to hold the fitting in place both at the aft end of the cockpit and the outside of the transom. For the actual pipe I used 1 1/2 in flexible pipe like that used to plumb spas. This allowed me bend the pipe into place inside the hull between the transom and the backside of the cockpit aft wall once I had glued the fittings to both ends of it. Once installed it was a simple matter to make a gasket of #400 Adhesive and screw the female ends onto the male fittings. I had already cut off most of the female end fittings so neither stuck out into the cockpit enough to catch an ankle and to also allow a decent sized flat surface to screw the Blue Sea flapper valve on the outside of the transom. Several pictures in the Msog photosite show the finished product. I was also leery of the stock aluminum sleeves that were fiberglassed into the boat to receive both ends of the original cockpit drain so I glassed them further into the boat so that the new drain hole clamps onto fiberglass instead of only to aluminum. That way electrolysis won't eventually corrode a hole in that aluminum and flood the boat. Currently I have my boat moored in a marina. Have fun, putter on the boat, go sailing. Thanks for that history, Jerry. It's nice to get real names, even if they're no longer available. Also helps explain why even production boat lines have many small irregularities over the years. Hmm, interesting. Maybe I could add one of these to stop water getting into the cockpit on higher wind days. M17 Spar Identification

HI All, I have M17 #301. I'm trying to identify the spars used on the boat, and finding it less than trivial. Does anyone on this mailing list have any hints or guesses? I've been idly considering the standing rigging, thinking about where and how I would add something like spinnaker pole parts ( ring/track & topping lift ), and thought of my warped old boom, and started browsing and guessing, but curious what kind of parts I might be able to find that were made for the spars. I haven't found anything that specifically says what spars were used, and I haven't stumbled across any parts that looked particularly like what I have onboard.

Thanks Dave. I'm wondering about boom and traveller. Both are warped from strenuous use. Maybe the boom could be replaced or straightened with a jack and frame or something. The traveller I was considering replacing. Both seem like fairly easy parts to isolate from the rest of the rigging.
