Blustery sail today

A quick report on how well behaved an M17 is, even in blustery gusty winds and lake chop with whitecaps, under main only with first reef in...that was the latter half of my sailing this afternoon, when the flukey southerly on Howard Prairie lake (southern Oregon) died away and then switched quickly to a strong gusty northerly (about 15 minutes from zero to whitecaps) while I was briefly anchored with northerly exposure. Darn near got blown aground trying to get outta there. But then Pajarita did amazingly well to windward under single reefed main only, moving along some even when I luffed her slightly in the wickedest gusts. And so well behaved - she would sail herself close-hauled safely to windward as I let go the tiller briefly twice (one to better secure the hastily retrieved anchor; one to better secure the jib on foredeck), luffing slightly but not stalling as (I assume) the windage on the bow quarter argued gently with the slight weather helm. Broken batten experiment...

So I found a broken batten... I've previously made a wooden batten that worked fine, a plexiglass/electrical tape wrap batten that also worked fine (on my snipe)...so now I'm trying a fiberglass fix for kicks on the Monty. I laid two layers of cloth and a heap of epoxy. I only plan on sanding any rough edges. I'll update! Any bets? Lol. I'm thinking it's 50/50. I def could have used more glass, but that would not have been sporting... The centerboard splashing fix is holding solid by the way. I dread changing the pennant one day though. Will require Drexel and a redo. But the clay like epoxy is super easy. Jazz

I totalled up my mileage, looks like around 40NM, about 14 hours.. And I found a broken batten today. I made one out of plexiglass for my Snipe that worked well, also have made them out of wood, that worked too. I'm going to give glassing it together a crack....low hopes there, but I'm curious.. Problems with Group Images

For the last month or so I haven't been able to see the images posted to the group. In the past when I clicked on a photo link I would be taken to a login page where I could enter my information and click "let me in" to see the image, but now I just get a 404 not found message when I click on the link. Anyone have any idea what I can do to get back to seeing images? Thanks! Vashon adventure!

The stars finally lined up and I'm making an attempt to circumnavigate vashon island! No wind right now...motoring with current. Wind should be there for the run home! How nice...dog, sun, beer and a worthy boat. I'm taking hourly logs, noting position and battery status. Nothing but an iPad on it at the moment and it is drawing .09 amps. I'll update. .. Cheers! M17 busted keel

I bought a 1976 M17 about 3 years ago with a broken keel. The center board retainer pin broke out the bottom of the keel like the center board was dropped hard against it. The pin is missing. It broke through both sides of the keel. I am finally getting ready to do this repair and looking for some guidance. Has anyone done this repair? Is this a common mishap?
