Hi,
My name is Michael Mann and in 1982, I sailed the Montgomery 15, Little Breeze from CA to Hawaii. I see on the web site that she has been rescued by new owners in Hawaii and I would love to correspond with them. I am currently sailing on a container ship headed for Honolulu and would welcome the chance to make contact.
Thanks for any info.

I ran out of gas in my 1963 Triumph TR4 and the airport when there flying my 1950 Cessna 170. I put some 100 low lead aviation fuel in the car to get home. It smelled like a plane and ran fine but by the time I got home the gasket on the fuel bowl had swelled, warped, and allowed the gas to leak out profusely. This suggests to me that aviation gas is not always harmless.

Hi gang,
I wrote this for someone else, but thought that you might find it
interesting too.
---------------------------------
Your interest in becoming a rag sailor (power boat owners are call
stink potters by rag sailors ) will have you opening a new book that
leads to a life-time of learning a whole series of new specialty subjects.
It starts with the know-how of basic sailing, but as soon as you have
mastered that you are off, into a whole new world of sailor-specific
topics and knowledge.
- Weather, and weather forecasting: and what do weather maps tell
you? ... is it safe to undertake the planned trip? .... or should you
wait till the front has passed?
- Sails: since they are your power source, how can you get the
most out of them? Additional sail controls? How do they work, and what
do they do for sail shape?
- Sail maintenance and repair. If a sail tears you have to be able
to fix it. (sailor's palm / sail needles / waxed thread / scissors /
sailor's knife)
- Anchoring: This is a skill that is hard to learn, because you
can't see the bottom where your anchor is looking for a holding spot,
but it is _/*not*/_ just drop the anchor
and hope for the best, keeping your fingers crossed that the
anchor holds. To be safely at anchor, you have to KNOW that your anchor
is holding properly.
That becomes the art / science of anchoring, gained the hard way....
- Boat maintenance / painting / modifications / improvements. Each
requires accumulated knowledge to be applied to the problem at hand.
You have to learn
knots; and where they are used and why; you have to learn how to
splice lines; it is part of being the self-sufficient sailor.
- Navigation. Just how do you get from A to B, or is it better to
get to B by going via C? Wind directions / tide status: incoming or
outgoing? with you or against you?
.... GPS is fine, and very useful, but what do you do if the
batteries are dead, or if you drop the GPS into the water and it no
longer works? What then? That is why
you need a chart, a compass, and know how to use them. Fog is
something that you encounter on the water. Can you sail / motor in the
fog and reach your destination safely? Do you know where you are
located, or are you just guessing? Eventually, as you stretch distances
and new places you wish to explore you will
have to learn to sail at night: what do the flashing lights on
buoys tell you? Can you identify lighthouses? It is a step-by-step
learning process; the more you sail
the more you learn; and the more you know, the further you want
to go.
- On the water you meet maritime birds: the gulls and terns, the
cormorants; and the things living in the water. You see a fin sticking
out of the water. What are they?
...or in Florida you may sail with a manatee, or large turtles,
or spot alligators sunning themselves on a river bank.
- Sailing on a small boat also influences your thinking. You have
to ask yourself is this large item I want on the boat worth the storage
space it requires? . ..or can I find a smaller version that does
the same job better and requires less space? You will find that line of
thinking will also apply at home.
- Maritime history: That is another subject you find yourself
immersed in. It is why Brazil speaks Portuguese and the rest of South
America speaks Spanish. Why? Well, back around 1494, Portugal and
Spain each were claiming ownership to half the world. It was finally
settled by a Treaty of Tordesillas, brokered by the Pope,
that gave Spain the western half of the world, and Portugal (who
already knew their way out to the East Indies -Indonesia) the eastern
half. The line that was drawn through the Atlantic Ocean gave
the South American bulge, which is now Brazil to the Portuguese, while
what remained became owned by Spain.
This is also the reason why other countries went off looking for a route
to the East Indies (to get to the very lucrative spice trade -
controlled by the Portuguese) -Columbus went west; Henry Hudson went
north; someone else tried to go over the top of Russia and got stranded
in the winter ice and escaped on foot back to Europe.... They all were
trying to get around the Pope's Treaty dividing up the world between
Spain and Portugal. They wanted their part of the wealth too.
You are thinking of entering a new world through sailing. Open the
door, start learning, and enjoy it for your whole lifetime. It is a
never ending learning process that is always fun and interesting.

Recently I rebedded the mast tabernacle on my M17. I caulked heavily
around the electrical cable coming up through the compression post so that
it emerged vertical, held by the caulking. When I raised the mast,
however, the cable got caught under the mast lip and shorted out the
masthead lights. I lowered and raised the mast again, placing the cable
where I thought this wouldn't happen, but was unable to get the mast up
without pinching the cable. Never had this problem before, and I wondered
if it's something to do locking the cable in a vertical position. Has
anyone encountered this problem, and if so, what's the solution?
If I need to replace the cable, can I pull it down through the compression
post from below? The cable for the cabin lights is in there too, so it
doesn't look too easy. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick

The pin isn't really tapered, it may have been peined on the starboard side
after it was put into the boat.
Pound out the rotation pin port to starboard. Put the pin back in starboard
to port.
Be sure to support the board as you remove the pin. This will make it
easier to get the pin out.

Klaas,
Checked my British Columbia map and see that you're on the Strait of Georgia on the Vancouver side. There is an active M-boat community to your south, on Puget Sound. I suggest visiting the Pocket Yacht Palooza at Port Townsend on July 19 - 20. You could sail, or drive around, or take the Victoria Ferry across. There will be other M-boaters there with their boats, as well as vendors, probably including sail makers.
I plan to drive, too far from the South end of Puget Sound to sail my M-15.

Hi, I need to add another through hull fitting to my M17 for a new bilge pump hose exit. I need to drill a 1" hole for my 3/4" fitting. I have a 1" wood drill bit but I'm afraid it will not make a clean cut. I looked in Home Depot and seen a 1" bit similar to a bit that you would use to drill out a door handle but the teeth were not close together so again I think it will cause some chipping.?
Can anyone confirm my doubts or suggest a type of bit to use..
Thanks,
Ron McNeil

When using a hole saw, you drill from one side and the pilot drill penetrates the other side. Then switch sides, and drill from the. opposite side. That way you won't splinter the fibreglass.

Also, drill the first part of the hole in reverse. The teeth won't grab and
chip the gel coat but will score a nice smooth groove. Do both sides this
way before drilling on through.

Nice pics Tyler. It appears, once again, necessity is the mother of invention!! Nice and effective design Jim. I will file this away for future (I really hope not) reference.

Subject: M_Boats: Got the centerboard down!
I got the stuck centerboard on my M15 out with a puller (see photos) based on a
design by Jim Sadler. The board was really stuck, and hammering down a rod from
the top did nothing. Rusting seems to have drastically increased it's thickness.
I wish I had tried this puller right from the beginning.
Now which way do I hammer out the pivot pin? Does it matter? I heard once that
it's tapered on one end, but I don't know which.
Sincerely,
Tyler

Ron:
the hole saws we use in the shop are made by Lenox. link below so you can
see pictures of the 'saws' -
http://www.lenoxtools.com/pages/lenox-hole-saws.aspx
use a hole saw for anything larger than 1/2". follow instructions for
drilling hole as already shared by Sandy and Larry.

Hi I know this question has been asked before But can't recall the advise that was given. So here it is: I have a 1985 M15 for about 3 years and I just started noticing that the main hangs down about 4 inches at the back. Is this normal or are my 29 year old sails done for and I need new sails? Also where can I find out the sail dimensions for my 1985 M15 is there a web page somewhere ??
Thanks
Klaas

Barrier coat (epoxy as InterLux 2000/2001 or similar) will work well if it
is inside the trunk - adheres well too.
Check with PaintBoy - Stan - he can give u good advice too.

good news that the new board fits ... means the ballast isn't rusting!
for the repairs to the trunk and the bottom of the centerboard trunk:
gel coat is doing two things -
* looks nice
* protects the fiberglass & resin from rubbing and UV
the BIG thing is protecting from UV. epoxy, or the resin used to make the
boat, and fiberglass are not UV stable. unprotected surfaces that 'see the
sun' will break down.
so you _must_ cover the epoxy fixes that are 'external and see sun' with
something.
deep inside the trunk will not see sun (the lower part may). if you are
not worried about rubbing from the board over your 'upper trunk patch' i
wouldn't cover.
the exterior stuff at the bottom of the trunk and keel can be covered with
-
* gel coat (in the amounts you need can be difficult to find for a 'home
fixer')
* an exterior boat paint (from Interlux for example)
* exterior grade oil based house paint (yes, this is what many home boat
builders use)
be sure to correctly prep the patch so the product you choose to cover it
will 'stick'. this involves cleaning off the epoxy blush, removing any
wax
(yes, even an old boat may have some mold release wax on the surface) and
sanding to assure a strong mechanical bond.
personal preference on how close the color match matches and how pretty a
surface.
