where should the boom sit on an M15?

Hi Everyone. I am a new M15 owner and was wondering about the seemingly arbitrary way in which the boom sits in the mast. On my boat, the boom falls and stops roughly a foot or so beneath the mast track opening, and there doesn't seem to be any obvious means of keeping it in place when the main is raised. I've noticed that my gooseneck does have a ring on the bottom and I wonder if that is intended to be connected to something on the mast or deck to keep the boom down (perhaps I should rig a boom vang?). When I set the topping lift to set the end of the boom roughly level with the goose neck, It seems that my main sail is just a bit saggy. This suggests that the boom should fall aft at a slight angle, but that looks odd to me (and it reduces head room in the cockpit. Any and all suggestions welcome. Thanks, Thom

Stepping and lowering the mast single handed

Hi, I'm new to the forum and recently bought (adopted?) a Montgomery 17 (#302; Orli). I've been stepping and lowering the mast with a safety line to the forestay but would like to be able to do this with a gin pole. I made a gin pole out of a 2x4 and U bolts. I attach the gin pole to the base of the mast using a cutout and a ratcheting strap. I'm able to get that tight enough so it's stable. On the other end I attach the jib halyard to a U bolt on top of the pole and on the under side I attach the trailer winch strap to raise and lower the mast, using the gin pole. Now here's the problem - I made baby shrouds to try to stabilize the mast and preventing it from side movement. Unfortunately, my attempts to stabilize the mast raising system has been less than successful. Any suggestions on how to provide sufficient stability so I can use this system with confidence? If you have aluminum toe rails this will make things easier otherwise you may have to put some attachment points along the deck or cabin. When I built my flawless system is was from information I gleaned off the net for the Kent ranger 26 which has good details to work with. congrats on having your 17 - such great boats!

heavy air in an M15

Montypals: Let's talk heavy air. Today I sailed with a nice guy interested in M15 boats. He was a pretty good sailor. We sailed out of Nick's Cove Tomales like I often do. The wind really kicked up as it can. I eventually double reefed, and had my standard working jib. The gusts must have gotten to at least 20 knots plus and the wind waves were quite big. Nonetheless, the M15 stayed quite dry despite pounding down the waves. Very impressive. And it was really pounding. But, I definitely struggled. Eventually it got to the point where even with the jib honked down I could not make progress to windward where I needed to go back to the dock. And I was getting closer to the windward shore. Every time I tried to point the boat would heel pretty good and rather than move forward would just dump air. At this point I figured that I could douse the jib, but would not be able to make progress to windward that way. Will a double reefed M15 point at all with a doused jib? I needed to go straight upwind to get home, so pointing was important. I don't have a storm jib, but even if I did, I would not be confident going on the deck under bare poles and hoisting it. Without the jib up I can't heave to. Defeated I dropped the sails and motored back. Even that was a challenge with heavy waves and windage. I steered straight into the wind so that the boat would track well, and it did. My 2HP Honda had no problem. I was worried about what to do if the motor conked out. I guess I would have anchored quickly so that the boat did not end up on the shore, and waited it out. I did feel very confident that the M15 would not swamp and keep me safe, and it did. Very good boat. In the future I will make sure to bring more fuel, although I did have a full tank, and noted it to be about 1/2 full when I returned. In thinking about it I do believe the anchor is an important safety tool to have on board also for just this reason. A learning experience today. Great cruise coming to an end

Julie and I just got a slip in Little Current, Ontario after 8 days cruising the North Channel of Lake Huron, above Manitoulin Island. Great weather, sweet blue water, green forest, and pink, white and grey granite. Every night at anchor, sometimes in 25 feet, last night in 4 feet. The weather was a gift this past week and a half, compared to earlier in the summer from other reports. Today's trip from the Benjamin Islands back to port was a highlight. Genoa poled out, wing on wing for 4 hours at 4-5 knots. No tweaking. Total relaxation (mostly for the person off the tiller). Great chance to clean up the boat while under way.
