Hello, folks As I mentioned in my earlier post, Good Old Boat is planning an upcoming feature article on the Montgomery 17, and I am requesting that owners willing to participate in a brief survey send me an email to that effect. Later this month, I will email each participant the survey form. I am still looking for a boat located somewhere between Seattle and Bellingham for a photo shoot and test sail with the owner, preferably including a trailer launch and recovery. With more than 30 years of experience in this area and more than 1,000,000 miles traveling to distant lands, I believe my understanding is somewhat broad with regards to the question. There is truth to what Gordon says, and there is also truth to what Louis says. The question is quite complex, certainly more than can be discussed on this board (although I am willing to share info and experience if anyone is interested). The valuation of currency is critical to understanding. Long term, it is important to balance import and export as it is important to help support US companies. M15 Centerboard

I have been painting the bottom with epoxy barrier coat. First I suspended the boat to paint the keel with 4 coats of barrier coat, then a few coats of bottom paint. While I had it suspended, I had to pry it (the centerboard) out. I looped a strap around it before resting the boat on the keel again so I would have something to pull it down again when I launch it. At that time I will lift it with a crane and free the board before putting it in the water for the rest of the season. I was thinking of drilling a very small hole in the bottom corner where the cb always seems to stick out a little bit so I have a means to pull it down, but was reluctant to do that just yet. Anyone considered that? BTW, my CB is black. Is that the original finish? I was thinking of pulling it at the end of the season to work on it so it will freely go up and down. But for now, I just want to sail! Scott Larson

Bulk heads

I have a 1976 M17. The port side cockpit storage locker, under the bench, is enclosed with plywood bulkheads that are completely sealed to the haul. Water in this locker does not drain to the bilge pump at the low point. Is this the correct arrangement? Seems like it should have drain holes through the bulkheads??? Question #2. It seems part of my forestay rigging is missing. It seems to be approximately 18" short. Does anyone know how long this is suppose to be. I bought this boat last Nov in Minnesota and have not had it in the water yet. Slow going. Probably won't get to sail until next season.
