Hi, My name is Michael Mann and in 1982, I sailed the Montgomery 15, Little Breeze from CA to Hawaii. I see on the web site that she has been rescued by new owners in Hawaii and I would love to correspond with them. Hi Everyone, In the spring I purchased a 1993 Montgomery 15 in near mint condition. I enjoyed sailing her all summer on Lake Arthur about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh. I've sailed nearly all my life and have owned several boats (Flying Scot, C Scow, Capri 22, O'Day Daysailer, Compac 16). I'm really very pleased with the M-15. She is all that I hoped for and more. I'm looking forward to following posts on the forum and learning more about my boat. I have two questions: 1. I'd like to raise the boat off the trailer (just a few inches would do) to apply antifouling paint to the portion of the hull that rests on the trailer bunks. I saw a few pictures that involved lifting the entire trailer, then bracing the boat and dropping the trailer. I don't feel comfortable doing that. Does anyone have another idea? I may just go to a marina and rent a lift. 2. I want to swim off the boat, but I'm really reluctant to drill holes in the transom for a permanent swim ladder. Can anyone recommend one of those removable ladders that hook over the rear coaming? Thanks. As I look out my office window at the grey Pittsburgh winter, my thoughts turn to sailing. Older M17 rudder measurements needed

I have the original rudder from a mid-70s M17 I used to own. It's the fixed rudder where the blade undershoots the keel. Just for the hell of it I'm refurbishing it and re-installing the pintals so they will line up correctly with the gudgeons on the transom of my early 90s M17. I have both the stock and IdaSailor rudders and know the downside of a fixed rudder, but one can't have too many rudders, can one? I'm interested to know how much gap there is between the top of the rudder's undershot blade and the keel. Anybody know that measurement off hand? Thanks. Tom Smith t _/\_

New Rudder thoughts

I'm aiming this question to Jerry since he was the designer but anyone...feel free. I'm making a new rudder for my M12. The old one is great but I'm making a fold up one and I'd still like to keep the original. I like learning these things so that's part of the reason too. It's fun messing with splinters and fumes. Anyway, I was going to make something along the lines of a Naca 0012 as that seems to be a popular foil - not to racey but not a pig either. Measuring the original rudder it doesn't look naca anything but the thickness to chord length ratio seems really small...about 8.5%. Literature suggests that this rudder may stale alot without constant attention. I never felt that way about it while using it so I guess I'm just looking for some clarification or understanding. Any thoughts on this? Considering the wood I'm using is a little thinner then what I wanted my rudder may end up closer to a 10% ratio. Again thoughts? Ok, I know, I know that all this detail really doesn't matter since there's no M12 class to be racing against and my dad has said it's pretty hard to screw up a rudder. I'm happy to know the tolerances are fairly forgiving but I'd still like to understand the theory for doing it right and even understand what and why behind the original rudder design. Thanks Jared

Montgomery 15 Ladder Installation

I think there was some recent discussion about ladders on a Montgomery 15. As outlined at this link, for several years I used a removable ladder on the boat. About a year ago put in a permanent ladder. Oars/Sweeps for M17?

Howzit from Kaneohe Bay? I’m dangerously close to splashing my restored ‘91 M17 and have options for AUX power; but must wonder if anyone has thought to / or successfully applied oars & locks to the cockpit combings. Or even a transom sweep??? Just checking! We just need to clear our lee shore reef, before we can sail to weather and beyond. Best ideas will be rewarded with an invitation to come over and crew! I'm with Doug. Good idea to have a permanent user friendly boarding ladder on a small sailboat. It can be very difficult to get back onto a small sailboat if one falls off. Clothing, shock, etc. all make it harder to get back onboard. Just placing your foot into the lowest rung of the ladder can be difficult. On the Sage 17, a boarding ladder is standard equipment as we believe it is a life saving piece of equipment. sal In a message dated 12/17/2013 9:01:51 A.M. I have a sweep for my M17. The few times I experimented, all I did was fishtail back and forth with little forward motion. I think it can work, I just don't have the correct swagger.... LOL The slaloms will continue! 2015 Bigger and Better than ever!:-) I'd LOVE to sail there!....I just don't want to SAIL (to) there! LOL Unfortunately the highway that my 65mph trailersailor travels on to get to it's next cruising destination is apparently still under construction! :-)Sean
