Electric Motor

Hello all, I believe this is my first e-mail question I have. I bought an M-15 in December and can't wait to get it out on the MN lakes this summer. I live in Minneapolis and have a strong desire to sail the boat on the lakes right in the city, one hang up is you an only use electric motors on the lakes. I am a good sailor, but not good enough to not need a motor. My question is, what is a good electric motor that I could buy that will not be that expensive (I would only use on these few lakes). Thanks in advance for your insight! -Ted

Electric Motor for M15

I bought a Minkota 30 pound motor for my Montgomery 15 on line. It works fine. At power setting of 3 out of 5 it pushes boat just under 3 mph. Maxes out around 4 mph. Used it on Lake Tahoe in fair amount of wind and waves and it worked well. About $100. David Grah Bishop California

Hi Ted, Welcome to the group, feel free to ask away!Dan Mostue is a local M15 owner and we have had his boat on Lake Nokomis and used my MinnKota trolling motor and a U-1 31ah battery. I have the smallest trolling motor MinnKota makes, it cost under $100.I bought to use with my M6.8 pram.The motor pushed the M15 OK, as long as there wasn't a strong breeze on the nose.If you are looking for something light to just get you in and away from the dock, this should be fine. Porta Potti for M-17

I removed the original Wilcox Crittenden head from my 1977 vintage M-17 last fall and plan to replace it with a Porta Potti. Where I sail there are no pump-out facilities. I'm considering either the Thetford 135 or 735. So far I haven't found a dealer nearby who has either in stock that I can look at. As near as I can tell from the Thetford web site, the difference seems to be the flushing mechanism - piston pump on the 735 versus bellows on the 135, whatever that means. Does anyone out there have wisdom to share on either one? Also, my old but fully-functioning Wilcox-Crittenden head is looking for a new home. I rebuilt it in 2004 and it has been rarely used. I'm located in the Twin Cities (MN), and I'm open to reasonable offers. Rich Makela M-17 #233 - Harmony

Rich, I'm thinking of doing the same proceedure with my vintage M17 head. Please keep us informed about what you find that fits. Height will be the critical factor.On the same note, Canadian regulations in the North Channel of Lake Huron call for a holding tank only. Porta-Potties are not legal. That is the only time I have used the stock tank on my M-17.Years back when I had a slip on Lake Waconia, I rigged a plastic gas tank to be my holding tank. That way I could use the marine toilet, but be able to disconnect and carry the gas/holding tank up to the dump station. The marina did not have a pump-out station. Sails for Monty 15

Thanks for all your feedback and as Jerry so eloquently put it I am a freak when it comes to sail shape and upwind performance. I do not doubt that Stan's sails still have use full life but it would really bother me to have a sail that does not do well upwind, coming from a beach cat background where we all raced every other weekend and having raced with Randy Smyth sails, I for one can really appreciate what sail makers do (You Hear That Judy B J )so I was planning on giving the old sails a trial but when the fall winds hit the Chesapeake Bay I want to make sure that my Monty 15 boggies upwind like a banshee. When I bought my old 1989 Precision 21 with its bagged out sails we switched to a full set of Ullman sails and man talk about a difference upwind in a blow and not having to dump the main, it was nice to point her up and make ground.
