Last year, I had the opportunity to watch adult diapers go into a dumpster on a daily basis at a skilled nursing facility, and in large quantities too. Was it legal? Depends. The only precaution I saw, was that the diapers were put into plastic trash bags. Pett's site also states that the bags are landfill approved. Another reason for not poking around in landfills. Neil, I found a 3 gallon bucket at my local hardware store with the same dimensions as the 5 gallon, except shorter. With the Reliance seat lid, it's a perfect fit in the M17 well. 'Jo and I took some Pett bags along on last year's Cruise up in the Northwest. All we did was to line the Port-a-pottie with them. Best of both worlds. We try not to use the dang thing period, but the few times nature called away from dockside we used the Pett, then discarded at the first appropriate facility. The P-o-P never got anything in it's tank and we never had to deal with it...BUT..it was there and ready to go if we ran out of bags WHICH WE DID! hahaha DIDN"T WE GARY??!! Here's a hint....if you are on a cruise and find a new toy (toy?) that you really like...but are running out of...don't go around bragging about how great your new (toy) is before you pull into port ready to hike up to West Marine and buy some more. Otherwise when you stroll into the West Marine at Friday Harbor and say "Hey, do you have any Pett bags?" you'll wonder why the two clerks get a funny look on their face and say to each other "what is it with the PETT bags today?" "Mr. You are like the 6th person to come in here asking for them and we only carry two boxes!" hahaha or.....If You are gonna brag....be the first one into port!!!! HAHAHA ..........Later when we saw Gary he had a big smile on his face!!!! We all had a good laugh.......and the West Marine guys probably still have 6 boxes sitting on the shelves awaiting our return next year!!!! HAHAHA Sean, Jo, and yes, Bosun :-)

I opted for the Herreschoff solution, substituting a hard rubber bucket from a Farm Supply store. An odor proof plastic liner takes care of the mess and can be sealed until at a dumpster. The bucket is also handy for wash jobs, etc.

PS And to Sean's point, with the Pett tripod system you have nothing but the tripod if you are out of bags. With the hassock (or as Dauntless would have, a true PoP) at least in dire circumstances--out of bags--you would have a sealable container albeit with some unpleasant cleanup afterwards. Just carry plenty of extras and even a few Hefty bags as backup to the backup (sorry Jonathan Winters if you have to carry them out! Oh Sh_t now I'm really dating myself) I think we got all the straight "poop" on porta potties we're gonna need :-) Neil

I guess there are a couple of choices for the "dry" system besides the Pett. Reliance makes two types, a cheap $20 toilet seat lid and cover that sits on a standard 5 Gal. paint bucket, and a $40 "hassock" model that actually has an inner pail and an inner cover (that holds a roll of tp) plus seat and outer cover. Reliance also makes a fold-to-go tripod model for about $30, but the Pett looks more durable. Point being, these could also use the Pett bag system and/or there are similar reliance companion water-free products such as the Bio-Gel and what Reliance calls "Double-Doodie". All will show up on a Google search. I'm not where my boat is at the moment but I'm betting the 5 Gal bucket is too tall to fit in the M15 well but the Hassock is 14' tall and probably will. Also Coleman makes a hassock-like product with the same tp roll holder. I think what it comes down to with the Hassock or the Pett is whether the tripod with the bag hanging down below or a set of concentric cylinders (with the bag contained within) would be better AND which would be more stable for--as someone put it--"finishing the job." Upon further thought I'm leaning toward the Hassock, using the Pett W.A.G. bags and save myself $40. Anyone out there have any experience with the Reliance products? And thanks again Rik for bringing the waterless solution to my attention. Definitely the way to go. Neil

Also, Rik, I just realize that Bert Felton (flickasf) frequents the 'other' Monty bbs at the trailersailor site, so he probably does not have his antenna up here. He has been a good contributor of info along with many others on both sites. I visit both boards now and then and it's easy to forget who is on which. I've visited the Pett website, seen the pics and video, considered all opinions. For my purposes--mostly day sailing, sometimes longer days, and occasional overnights--the Pett is the Bomb..seems to fit the bill perfectly. Most days, when I'm out on a local lake for maybe 3 hours, It will never get used, so I wouldn't expect to go through bags very quickly. Also nice 'n light to carry ashore for remote boat-in shore camping if there are no facilities. As for the trying out with a bucket and just the bags--that will flunk the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) test. I'm sold and plan to order one. Just waiting for an answer if someone knows if it will sit assembled (3 legs down) in the well in sole of the M15 and still be low-enough profile with the lid down for clearance under the plywood cover that supports the cushion above it. Looks like it will... Thank goodness for this forum for helping me avoid a -ahem- crappy $100 mistake Neil
