I have just become aware of the existence of tall rigs for the M17. Can anyone give the dimensions for the differences between the tall and short rig? In regards to the layout question, how about a flush deck aft with just a small cockpit footwell. This would give tons of room below (well sort of), room to sleep above decks when able and a very seaworthy low volume cockpit Joe S

Hmm... I was thinking about that stern anchor business. On my M15, I was considering covering between the two seats about the last foot back to the transom. I was just going to put a little mahogany plank grate over with a small toe rail on the floor to hold a cooler for sandwiches and liquid courage. Just thinking, if it was molded into place with a lid, it might make a good anchor locker and free up the port lazzarette, where I keep it now. Just an idea. Also realizing most Monty owners probably sail primarily in lakes, maybe a taller rig is not so bad. Really good light air boats are great fun. I sail in Monterey Bay, because that's where I live, but if I had a good long lake instead, who knows, I might sail even more. Blake Reimer IOTA

Jerry, et al, My thinking (and I'm one of the guys that gets in the wind a bit AND likes to go fast) is that the primary rig consideration is seaworthiness, THEN speed. If the hull is fast, a less wispy rig will not slow her down that much. But if the rig overpowers at the first sign of a breeze, then few will want to go fast in her anyway. Personally, I am comfortable with the ballast on the M-15, but can understand how it can be a little, uh, disconcerting in the alleged 'death rolls' that are alluded to. I am satisfied and impressed that she will pop back up quickly once the sheets are eased. In a good chop she still powers through well and, off the wind her sprightly manners and eagerness to surf down a face are traits I wouldn't want to give up. Looking to the near future, another advantage to less ballast is a smaller, more efficient tow vehicle. Fuel prices will grow larger and BFFWDPU's and SUV's are soon going to be running out of dinosaurs to burn. The foredeck on an M15 is hard enough to get to at my age without adding a hatch to trip over. I would probably want to nix the hatch in favor of a dorado vent and opening port options. A little more erect cabintop that would allow a little easier movement down below is not a bad thing. I am prone to thinking it could also improve the asthetics-depending on the rest of it. Making sure that a 2-3HP four stroke will stow easily would be a big plus as well. Mine currently goes in the footwell below the hatch which can be difficult and messy unless the motor is completely tight. OK my two cents worth: I could go either way on the coach roof. Aesthetically, I like the looks of the coach roof on the 15 and 17 and have not liked the vertical forward part of the 23's coach roof. I have a 15 and sail on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior so not having the opening fore hatch has not been too much of a problem -- except for the condensation. Having said this, I would like a forward hatch. I would go for the opening portlights. Tall rig. Speed and pointing are important. Can always reef... John M-15 Jester

Hi Listers, In my experience the inflatable kayak seems to be a great tender for my M17. I am using a single person Sevylor. It inflates easily in the cockpit and launched, can be towed for short distances or deflated and stored in the aft end of the cockpit floor. It has room to carry some gear which I do with a dry bag, has adjustable back support, and is very stable. The drawbacks are poor paddling against current and wind, and it has many fabric folds which take forever to dry before storing in the carry bag. I also own a M6.8 which I plan to tow and use with my M23 in the future. I know those work well after using one in the San Juans on the 2005 M-boat regatta. I'm looking forward to hooking a big Northern Pike while in my Kayak sometime and having it tow me around..... I think a great compromise for an M17 or and M15 is an inflatable Kayak... My wife and I have 2 singles from Advanced Elements and they work very well. On the way to the first mooring we leave them in the bag. They take no time to fill up and they are a real quality product with mil spec. valves, actually track well (the Advanced Frame models) and are relatively fast. If I had to do it over again I would get the tandem as it can also be paddled as a single. Break down just for moving to another spot can be done in a few minutes. I have not found a way to tow them (I tried once, however it was squirrelly when we were sailing at hull speed) Other companies make really quality inflatable's in Canoes and Kayaks and a host of different price ranges. I must be getting (a) dinghy??

I have prior experience using my Honda 2 for an anchor. It would have worked fine except I neglected to tie some rode to it! Luckily it was at a slip in Monterey and I managed to fish it out, flush it out and it's still going strong! As tough as the little Honda is, I can't recommend anyone else try it. Maybe I should just stick to paddling...

More newbie questions...Cruising storage solutions?

Just 2 adults using an M17. Lots of different totes and open baskets out there to slide under the cockpit or down the quarter berth. (wow, that starboard one goes waaay back!). We looked at some perforated plastic baskets tonight that would push on down either quarter berth. For the starboard side would have to link them together to retrieve the back 2 easily. These same also work under the cockpit as well. We thought that having lids might be a hassle removing them in the relatively confined space of the seating area. We used dry bags on our previous open boat. Often were diving deep into them to come up with the desired item, or emptying the bag completely. What have you found works well for you? Rigid totes or flexible bags? With the an outboard motor mounted on port side, and the deep cockpit locker there as well, do you find you are weighted more to port side? We have a knock off claw with 10 feet of chain. I feel that an anchor should be readily available at all times, so the deep port locker in a bucket is a logical place, except for the weight distribution issue. I believe the previous owner kept it in a bag below the cockpit, on starboard side. Only accessible by going below to get it out. Where do you store your primary anchor and rode?
