Reefing arrangements

Rick had mentioned that he reefs while hove to. I do the same and find it very efficient. To do this though the boom is outboard of the cockpit and I but a turning block just aft of the reefing clew in order to lead the reefing line foward along the boom so that I am not leaning outboard of the boat while reefing. So my reefing clew arrangement is a line from a pad eye on the port side through the reefing clew, to turning block on starboard and then forward to a small horn cleat about 3 feet aft of the mast. When the boat is hove to the boat is far more stable than trying to head into the wind and everything works smoother so that I am comfortable with just a reefing hook at the gooseneck. Hey guys, I was riding on the Burke-Gilman on Saturday, and I noticed a Montgomery 17 [ivory with green (I think) stripe, not very old] parked across the street from the Ballard locks. I wasn't close enough to see a name or number. I did a quick check on the Montgomery Owners Registry, but I didn't see anyone who was listed as being in actual Seattle (as opposed to the suburbs) with such a boat (although it is possible it was a 15; everything looks bigger from a recumbent). I was wondering if it did belong to someone on the List, or if maybe it belonged to someone new. If the latter, I thought that next time I was down there, I'd leave a note on the boat inviting them to join the list. -- Debora Eidolon (M17 635)

The hard core skiers in Colorado are always comparing "how many days they got to ski". Kind of like a new years resolution and competition. I think Bones is right. Pick an attainable goal as to numbers of days sailing. Meet it and increase the next year. You know, big red "X's" on the calendar. Ssooo, how many days did you get to sail in '09? Hope your Christmas was good. Santa was good to out boat. New sails from HP (Harry is great to work with) and some boat stuff. sliding gooseneck

Always the questions. My 2004 M17 has a sliding gooseneck that allows the boom to rotate maybe 5 degrees from vertical in either direction, but the boom can rotate 360 degrees if it is pulled aft against the spring in the fitting. Anyone know why it is made this way? Is it just a shock-absorbing mechanism? Thanks, and Happy Solstice! Puzzled in Snow Country

M-17 ballast total weight

I read in Jerry's old M-17 brochure that the '80s-era boats have 580 pounds of ballast. Does that figure include the cast iron centerboard, which I believe Jerry has said weighs about 170 pounds, or is it only the iron shot glassed into the keel, as one entry on the MSOG site suggests? Seranita Hawes Pipe...Bill's Question

Hi Guys... Thanks for the kind words about Seranita gents! Bill, regarding your question and to the fact you already got it figured out before I got back to the list...yes, the hawes is simply like a capped opening which leads my chain and rode right down to the forwardmost portion of the vberth and I keep it in a small crate behind the pillows in the photo. My eventual plan was to glass in a shelf with a four or five inch lip that would eliminate the need for the crate and also give me back the space in the berth. I have been trying to figure out how to dispense with the moisture generated with that plan. Presently, I use a plastic trash liner under the crate and a big beach towel under it which seems to suffice, although not the ideal scenario. JB

"Seranita" M-17 for Sale

I am considering selling my 1977 Montgomery 17, "Seranita" (Little Dolphin) Sail #232, berthed here in San Diego in order to take advantage of another opportunity. I realize there is a classified ads section on the website, but I want to make sure the Monty Owners are aware her availability first before I go out to the broader market. Seranita is in Exceptional condition. I have spent the last two years upgrading her and truly she appears as though she is a much newer boat. Sails are good and include a 125% jib and a 100% jib. She is fitted with a CDI roller furler. I have just added an anchor hawes pipe and a Samson post to the foredeck, a new electrical panel, new anchor lighting and deck lighting with new wiring in the mast, a new Kenwood stereo with cockpit speakers and ipod connect, a new Standard Horizon VHF with a connection in the cockpit for the RAM mic, the upholstery is in near new condition, every inch of Seranita has been scrubbed clean and all bilges were cleaned and painted, I upgraded to a mid-cockpit Garhauer mainsheet traveler system, New Hatchboards were fabricated last year and all teak has been varnished with 5 coats of Cetol Gloss after having 3 coats of Cetol Natural Teak. All new running rigging a year and a half ago, the rudder was just removed filled and faired and re-installed, the trailer is also in great condition and the 2004 Suzuki 4hp outboard has just been serviced, I had a very cool cockpit grate made from an extremely hard wood called Ipe and it adds greatly to the amazing Monty "look". I am certain I am leaving some things out, but you can be assured that Seranita is a boat anyone would be proud to own as I have been. I will be asking $9k which one might feel is high for the age, but I feel that one look at Seranita will justify the value. Speedtech makes a great portable depth sounder. It is a self contained unit with its own battery. There are two models. One you hold over the side and take a reading; the other can be mounted. I have had the former for years and it works great. Bert Zephyr, M 15
