Hello All, Just chiming in on sailing on Lake Superior. Last year I took my M-15 up to Lake Superior and circumnavigated Isle Royale. For those who are not familiar with Isle Royale, it is a 45 mile long and 9 mile wide island located about 10-15 miles out into the lake near the Minnesota/Canada border. Almost the entire island is a National Park and is home to the longest running predator/prey (wolf/moose) study on the globe. I departed from Grand Portage, Minnesota for the 25 mile crossing to Windigo which is located at the southern tip of the island. The crossing was uneventful. From Windigo, whether one goes clockwise or counter clockwise there is a long passage (about 25-30 miles) to the next anchorage with no refuge so watching the weather was critical. Most of the rest of the island affords shorter passages though I did find myself sailing 10 hour days. Throughout the 10 day trip the voyage was spectacular. I had some exciting windy days, some slow windless days, plenty of fog and always incredible scenery to watch. With regard to safety, weather and water temperature was always at the forefront of my mind. I knew that if I fell in the water that survival would be dependent upon quick return to the boat. The water temperature is about 52 degrees. Therefore I had a harness and towed my inflatable kayak a good distance behind. I purchased an EPIRB for the trip and had other safety devices such as good ground tackle (22 pound Bruce anchor and plenty of warp in addition to two other anchors), GPS, and plenty of warm clothes to keep me warm and dry. With the water so cold, temperatures out on the water typically hovered around 55 degrees. At anchor it was about 70 or so during the days and dropped into the 50s at night. I watched the weather carefully and only once got caught in a very fast moving front. I was bobbing around in little wind when I saw a front move over the island and approach me. It looked like a wave rolling toward me. (I am attaching a picture of this.) I quickly lowered my sails and fired up the outboard. In a matter of minutes the sea went from calm to very choppy. It overturned my kayak which I then pulled in, deflated, and stowed in the cockpit. I rode out the wind and front. After it passed the sailing was great. Mosquitoes were a big challenge at night. Right at sunset (9:00 or so) the mosquitoes would come out. The seemed to thrive on the mosquito repellent I wore so that was useless. Fortunately I had rigged my companion way with mosquito netting which worked to keep the little blood suckers off me. I would spend about 10-15 minutes hunting down and killing those already in the cabin and then settle down to read a book while I was serenaded by thousands of mosquitoes. The noise was amazing! The mosquito netting was literally covered with them This year I am planning another trip -- this time during Labor Day. I will spend two weeks going around the island again, taking a bit more time exploring. Last year I was on a tighter schedule and had to keep moving each day. I have bought a new suit of sails which includes a storm jib and a main with two reef points. I will let you all know how that trip goes... John Hippe

Hello Mark, It was blowing about 15 knots that day. The wind was coming right out of the direction that I was trying to go so the day was a long one. If I remember correctly it was about a 10-12 hour slog. John

Spectacular report, John. Yours must be of brass, to head for Isle Royale in a 15. Good on you. Every report I've had from the Arrowhead -- Gunflint, Boundary Waters and trails -- is that the blackflies and ticks are atrocious this year, so the mosquito report isn't too surprising. I was always amazed that I could be out miles from shore on Superior and have wasps bothering me. Could be a karmic thing. Good report on the water temperature, too. It's the singlemost serious element of any endeavour up there. And it's not cold salt water, so you don't even get buoyancy out of it. ************** Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Hello Gordon, I like your pan up to the main in your video, nice sail trim :) What was the wind speed that day? I noticed your were reefed and still clipping along nicely. I've chartered in the Apostles a number of times and overnighted in anchorage off Stockton, but always in boats in the 27-30' range, which always seemed adequate but I never took them for granted and even a 29 with a lot of grinders aboard needs to be reefed sometimes. On one Stockton visit, we did spot what appeared to be a Potter at anchor, and though it looked small across the bay, it was likely a 19. I had already resolved never to take my young kids far out on Superior in my M15, given the lake's frigid temperature and concomitant hazards of MOB -- especially skipper overboard. But I always remained open to having a go myself in my M15. Yet I wonder if some of you have experience or thoughts on whether it would be foolhardy to take such a small boat out to the islands. For those of you reading who are not familiar with Superior, it's not a lake, it's an inland sea, and there are certainly dozens and likely hundreds of oceangoing vessels lying on its floor. Its waters are breathtakingly cold year-round. I have anchored in the lee on one of the islands, thinking all was well, and checked at 2 a.m. to find that every boat in the bay had swung 180 degrees with a change in weather. It seems that most folks responding are in at least 17s, which is quite a bit more boat than a 15. Have any readers taken a 15 out into the Apostles? Any reports would be welcome. Obviously I'll have to make my own assessment about skills and comfort level, both of which are high, but I also have lots of things to do yet in this ever-shortening passage and I don't need to be proving myself in high-risk adventures. And just as obviously, on site conditions will have to be assessed at the time of departure. All that being said, sailing the Apostles has provided the highlights of 30 years of inland sailing, and it's been a long time since I've been able to get up there. Gordon, Thanks for taking the reins on the Apostle trip, If I didn't have a full September booked, I'd be hoping on the bandwagon. I will be up in Duluth the week of August 18th. I plan to haul my M17 out of hibernation, give her a bath, and either head up to Lake Vermillion, or slip in Duluth and sail around the bay area. It will depend upon weather and business commitments. My wife Nancy and I are headed to the twin ports of Duluth-Superior for the tall ship festival Aug 1st. Three big square riggers are coming in and we will tour them all. Then off with another couple to sail their Island Packet 37 for a few days. One note on the Apostles, keep your schedule VERY flexible. Stockton may be only 15 NM from Bayfield but when mighty Superior decides to throw a tantrum, you don't want to be her whipping boy. The 22 group of islands is truly lovely, and all Monty folks should sail them sometime. Have a blast. San Diego Sailing trip report

Returned on Sunday evening from a 5 day sailing trip over to San Diego. Once again we joined our friends from the Socal Potters group. Although, this time, it looked more like the Socal Monty's group...at least for the first day as the Monty's outnumbered the Potters (for the first day at least!) Captain Howie from the Socal Potter group did another steller job of hosting their yearly "Kick-back Cruise" which consisted of some sailing in the bay, some offshore daysailing, overnight anchoring and raft ups, fireworks every night courtesy of Sea World, and a picnic/cookout on beautiful Mission Bay beach as well as a couple of meals at absolutely stunning "boat-up" restaurants . As always, "non-potters" were welcomed into the group and made un-official "potters for a day". Montys were represented by Fuh-shing and Shi-lan in their M15, Matt and Noah in their M17, and Jo and I in our 23. Weather was beautiful (hey..its San Diego...what did you expect!). Big thanks to Howie and the Potter group for allowing us to join them. We'll be also joining them for the third year in a row for their late August Channel Islands Harbor/ Anacapa Island/Ventura outing. This is a no miss event as Oxnard and Channel Islands Harbor is VERY small boat friendly...It always blows....and scenery is great. Lets keep building the "Socal Monty Fleet" participation!!! We got three Montys on the Catalina Island trip, three Monty's in San Diego...lets make it four or more in August. Jo and I will be making a Wed thru Sun trip. Come, bring your Monty, and relax with us for 4 or five days! How about you other AZ Monty guys???.....Put those trailers to use!!!!
