The way I see it, LED (cluster types) bulbs put into incandescent fixtures doesn't change anything but battery draw...and using less juice on trailer lights isn't a concern to 99% of trailer boaters. Those fixture aren't sealed tight like LED fixtures. Submergible incandescent fixtures have a small vent on the bottom to let moisture out. It breaths enough to let condensation happen even if water never "leaks" in from launching. It's not that difficult to make standard submergible fixtures work for yrs and yrs of dunkings without problems. Take the lens off and remove the brass bulb holder. It comes out in pieces and most are a press in friction fit. Liberally coat ALL metal surfaces (back and front) with dielectric grease. Liberally coat inside the bulb socket and bulb base up to the glass but not over the glass. Glob it on the bare wire connections. Leave no uncoated metal inside the fixture. Assemble everything and make sure the lens gasket is good. Caulk the fixture where the wires enter (LED users should caulk their wires for better life too). Apply grease to the harness connectors. This pretty much eliminates trailer light issues on submergible's and works as well on nav lights. How long? I have one trailer going on 12 yrs of saltwater launching and not even a bulb change yet. Avg life on these units in my Florida neighborhood is 3-5 yrs without coating with grease...and I see several a week. My other trailers (3) share one set of clip ons that don't get wet. I registered yesterday as phils.2008 and want to introduce myself to the group. I purchased "Oui-1," hull # 515, for me and my wife and we are learning to sail it on Cave Run Lake, about one and one half hours east of Lexington, KY. We are enjoying it immensely which is great since we are taking up sailing now that we have hit our 70's. We are also doing some projects on Oui-1 like installing cabin house and cockpit handrails since our age makes us want more handholds. We have taken her out in winds of 20 knots with gusts higher according to the weather bureau. She sailed through it so nicely that she gave us confidence. We lucked out by getting a couple to sail with us who have a lot of experience and are teaching us about cruising and racing. The husband has crossed oceans on sailboats, and the wife has owned and sailed her Flicka extensively. We live in central Kentucky and are planning to trail Oui-1 to new places around the country as we gain more experience and confidence. Phil

M17 #32

Greetings all, I have been busy with the refresh on my new to me 1974 M17 #32. The only part that I was unable to view prior to purchase was the center board and not wanting to be unaware, I conducted the lift off the trailer as per a system similar to Larry and refurbished the centerboard, new stop bolt and added new bottom paint. Cosmetic work on the brightwork, made new teak handrails and reinforced the lower cockpit bulkhead so that the center board winch would have better support. My running and standing rigging is new by Touchstone Rigging Port Townsend and have a new Schaffer CF 500 snap furler to go with the genoa. Sail slugs on main luff and foot and also have new lazyjacks, autohelm 1000 for those moments when I want to leave the tiller or when the new iron wind Yamaha 8 - 4 stroke is pressed into service. I have a new whale gusher manual pump clone coming from a successful Ebay bid and built a mast raising gin pole to assist easy up and down. I enjoy viewing the posts by members and will share what I have learned. Anyway that’s my update for now. We’ll be sailing Babine Lake in northwest British Columbia as our initial waters for the month of June or so and then expand ….. Bruce Ward s/v caerulea

heh Steve and Diana, I own a 16 Angler CDory as well as my new M17. The more I connect with fellow sailors the more the similarities come through. 14 years ago I sailed a Potter 19 then bought a Halman 20 double ender and contacted a gal in North Carolina who also sailed one who then sold hers to buy a CDory unbeknownst to me until I found her on their user groups site when I bought it. So now I have two great boats....5 guitars and counting!
