It's just water stains from dirty water. Use On/Off to get the stains out when nothing else works. The stains show the true waterline. Mark it so you can straighten up the paint line later. Sleeping accomodations

I am currently the owner of a Sea Pearl 21 with convertible cabin, which is ok for just me, but since my two grandsons now go with me nearly every time I am out, I really need a boat that will sleep 3 comfortably. I am 5'7"; my oldest grandson, age 14, is a couple inches taller already, and my 10 yr old grandson will probably become adult size early as well. We just came back from a 5 day trip on the barrier islands near Pensacola, and the boys had to tent camp in the sand. Question: are the berths in an M-17 comfortable for three adults? I wasn't aware, until I recently had my sail reconditioned by Sail Care, that they sell hardware also. There are a few hardware items that I was looking at in their catalogue and they seem to be reasonably priced... Lou ( Still The One )

Now that I am back in my summer sailing mode, I started reading the MontyBlog again.... I just ordered new shrouds, tangs, sailstop and boom vang from Dwyer Aluminum Mast Co (find it on the web) for my Monty15, The whole tab including UPS ground was about $160, an excellent bargain in my books and a considerable discount from the list prices on their site (I think they said 40%). It took them about 9 days to make up the shrouds and send them - not blindingly fast, but not bad. I think most M-15's come with a lot of Dwyer parts to begin with.... Also, if you are willing to poke around on ebay, I managed to get a new Harken mainsheet assembly for less than half of West Marine's price. It got here brand new, as advertised, in original packaging in four days. I will still support West Marine and the other local chandlers here in Santa Cruz (in fact, I am on my way to WM today), but I still look for a bargain when I have the time.... Can someone take a guess what this is?

Dear members, the boat I am looking at buying (1975 M-17) has a mysterious deposit just above the waterline, see the photo at http://www.math.wisc.edu/~andreic/P6070387.JPG Can anyone guess what it can be? The boat spent most of the last few summers (except for the last one) docked on a fresh water lake in Utah. What is very strange is that the deposit appears to exist only *above* the waterline. Do you think it could be some kind of minerals from the water (e.g., iron, calcium)? How hard would it be to remove such a deposit? Or a mold, that grows on humid gelcoat, but not in the water? Could it have damaged the gelcoat? Despite the fact that the boat has been in storage for the last year and a half, I know from sailing pictures of the former owner that the deposit was there at the end of the last summer when the boat was sailed, two years ago (photo was of the boat in the water, sailing, and one could see the deposit at the bow). Right on - it ain't horsepower! I do not want be in the vicinity of some of the trailering combos I have heard of on some trailerboat lists! I have 100s of thousands of miles towing boats to 30' and 15000#s, these are not 'relaxing' drives even when properly equipped and certainly not for everyone. Because your car gets to the top of the hill does not mean a lot - can it STOP the load?? Gosh forbid you have to stand on your brakes going even 55 MPH and stop your vehicle with an M-17 or larger behind you - and the vehicle just keeps going forward - it is enough to make you get out and walk home after one of those events! No flames - Let's all Motor Safe - with the price of dinosaur juice getting to be what it is - PLEASE do not try to tow with even a marginal vehicle. Make sure the vehicle can steer and most importantly STOP the trailer! Little cars are WAY cool and will be the thing of the immediate future - Small lightweight tow vehicles will probably never exist. You need MASS to slow MASS. Andrei - It appears to me to be a petrolium based product that was on the surface of the water. Possibly an Oil company crude oil treatment chemical , if there is any oil field production in the area of the lake. The stain appears to have attacked the surface of the jellcoat; as if it was on the surface of the water and splashed up on the side of the boat as it was under way etc. Possibly it could be neutralized or cleaned with something like Simple Green or other strong cleaning solutions that would not directly attack the jellcoat finish, Check with a local Fiberglass specialists in your area first. Tom The hitch is a small part of what determines the tow rating of a vehicle. You could put on a hitch rated for 6000 lbs and it would not increase the tow rating of the vehicle one ounce. There are a lot of things that determine the tow rating. Transmission, drive line, u joints, axles, brakes, differential, frame, are included. The horsepower does not have much to do with the tow rating. The weakest link of the vehicle is what determines it. I drive a Dodge diesel pickup with 180 hp, and it is rated to tow 11,500 lbs. Most of the big-rigs are not over 300 hp., and tow 80,000 lbs. All the things I mentioned are built stronger, that is the difference. That is why my truck weighs 3000 lbs more than the car that can tow 2000 lbs, everything is stronger and heavier. Vehicles with automatics usually have a higher tow rating that manual transmissions. The automatics are more forgiving of the driver when towing, and it puts less strain on the rest of the running gear. A few years back Ford increased the tow rating of their pickups by 1000 lbs, all they did different was put synthetic oil in the differential housing, which made it run cooler. Heat is another factor in determining tow ratings. Cooler is better. Even at $5.00 a gallon for diesel I still would buy another truck. I get 22 mpg on the highway,17-18 in town, and 13-14 mpg towing my 8000 lb 5th wheel. Some of the post I have read here are not much better than that towing a 1600 lb M boat, and they are at the capicity of the vehicle. ladder mounting

Bert, If you're going to start cutting holes, you might want to consider a hatch at the aft end of the horizontal surface of the starboard seat. This will give you access to the transom and provide additional storage. I have one there and use the space to store all my headsails. It's very convenient.
