While re-rigging the mast on my M17 after it sat in my brother's yard for 15 years, I found that the halliards would were jammed inside the mast. It took several hours to remove the accumulated nesting material from the mast using an electrician's fish tape with hooks taped to the end. The stuff was packed 8 feet into the base of the mast and filled a 5 gallon bucket halfway. A good pressure washing cleared the remaining bit of junk. I made a wooden plug to put into the foot of the mast to stop future intruders when the mast is down. I spliced on new rope tails and fished them through the turning blocks to the outside of the mast. Removing the bolt through the mast that holds the spreader brackets simplified the job. I then put a conduit of thin PVC tubing into the mast to prevent the halliards from chafing the wiring for the new masthead tricolor and the steaming light and another for the VHF antenna coax. I had a new masthead extension (similar to the one on flush deck M17 Amy) fabricated so the backstay will clear the roach of the full batten main and gives a nice long flat top for the windvane, tricolor masthead light and VHF antenna to be clear of each other. The moral of this story is that the open end of a mast is an open invitation for critters to nest. My original M15 and my present M15 had the original black nylon jam cleats. They all wore out in time, allowing the halyards to slip through. Now I have mounted really neat English-made vertical cam cleats from West Marine. They seemed terribly small when they arrived, but they are up to the strain most admirably. They are keyed red and green, and I have three each side of the aft end of the cabin top. Port to starboard they hold: Jib sheet, one end of my double- ended topping lift/Lazy Jacks (the other end is near the aft end of the boom), jib halyard, main downhaul, main halyard and jib sheet. Lines for the jib brailer and jib downhaul are on the outboard side of the port forward gunwale. Photos of the cam cleats if anyone asks, but not on here. John R. HI Joe, I have my main halyard led aft via the blocks but have a cabin mounted small winch and a conventional cleat. I find the winch does help if you wish to tension the luff of the main and get the "scallops" removed. I also use the winch when stepping the mast running a safety line from the jib halyard through a block at the bow and aft to the winch/cleat. rigging at the base of the mast

If you are going to bring your halyard or halyards back, I recommend putting a mast organizer under the tabernacle. Joe, You can use a camcleat as was OEM on the jib halyard on the early 80's boats. I would recommend a Harken 150 with a bullseye fairlead forward of the cleat or a Harken 459 (incorporates fairlead); just remember your halyard may be accidentally loosened when the line is accidentally knocked out of the camcleat but a sheetstopper will securely lock the line. Actually the Harkens may be too easily operated for this application, find a stinky ol gummed up one that is a bit stiff to operate, actually if I can find my old jib halyard cleat you are welcome to it gratis. I will look around (don't hold your breath or postpone trips) Check Ronstan for camcleats as they make some 'good' ones too. They are not as slippery.
