When hoisting the main, I set it a few inches below the masthead so that the top batten doesn't catch on the backstay, so it needs no particular tension. I adjust the luff tension by pulling down on the boom when making the downhaul fast. No need for a halyard winch. T shirt update

Ok...after a lot of monkeying around with different designs for the front pocket we decided that we will just shrink the logo in its entirety and place it on the pocket. Due to the length/width limitations of printing on the pocket, just putting the abstract boat artwork wasn't looking right. So, the artwork should be finalized this week and the silk screens burnt by the beginning of next week. I am on duty for the next 48 hours so I won't be able to get anything else done 'till Monday or Tuesday. I am expecting the prices to be just about identical to the Monty t-shirts we did, but let me confirm that on Monday. I will post prices for each item hopefully by Tuesday and then we'll start a two week ordering period. At the end of two weeks I'll order all the items I have received prepaid orders for. They will ship as soon as I get them. This is exactly the same way we did the last two t-shirt/sweatshirt orders. One extra item that we'll offer this time around is a "girly" style t-shirt. Hello Dan and Jo, I cannot remember the idea of changing the galley into a seat/berth has ever been discussed before and I've been on the list forever and have all of the old M-boat newsletters. I have the galley model and it works well for me because I mainly single-hand my M17. It seems to me that used M17's are getting more difficult to locate. You could certainly keep looking for the 3.5 berth model, depending upon your time frame. Thinking about changing the berth model, you will need to cut out the sink-shelf-storage assembly, then construct a plywood frame to tie into the stringers for support. Using wood would be easier than glass, in my mind, then paint the entire frame and bunk with epoxy paint. The interior of my M23 was built without a drop in glass liner, and the berths are all wood. The two big questions in my mind are is the galley a structural member, and how adept are you at hand tools and woodworking? Do you have the time and desire to modify a boat? Actually, it sounds to me like an easier job than rebuilding the foredeck of my M17 to remove the saturated balsa core! (I wouldn't wish to do that again). Good luck. Keel Inspection

What is the best way to check the line that raises and lowers the keel on a M 15? The only way I can think of is to jack the boat up high enough to drop the keel, but what can it rest on so it does not fall? Phil

Question M 17

I have a new M 17 which I keep in a wet slip. It seems to keep around 2" of water in the cockpit when sitting in the slip. I don't store the motor on the boat nor do I have any stores on the boat. Of course sailing it drains. Is this typical. Also, I put the boat in the water for a short period of time to get a water mark for bottom paint again with no stores on the boat. Once the boat is loaded will that water mark change. I just want to make sure I get the bottom paint on correctly. Regards, Tony Reed

As always there are different opinions, but I would at least bring the bottom paint to the water line. If you do not, you will get ugly growth where the hull sits in the water unpainted. At least this is true in salt water. My Flicka has her bottom paint about one and one half inches above the water line; I replaced the cove stripe. It is covered with antifouling paint. In this way, when she is loaded, I don't get growth. I am not suggesting that you put it up that far on your Montgomery. What do you think of Dovekies?

Connie, Like we always discuss, all boats are a compromise, but there's always that urge in me to find perfection. The Dovekie has some unique features that seem to make it a fine camp cruiser when conditions are ideal, but it seems to be lacking when facing contingency situations. Connie said, "Admittedly, accommodations are tight; but in all other aspects it has what is needed in any ship: good storage for sails; anchors; fenders; and all the gear that accumulates as you travel; the Bimini; swim ladder; outboard fuel; cleaning equipment and supplies; it sails beautifully, is seaworthy, and is trailerable behind a small car. You can't ask for more in 15 feet length." You're so right about the virtues of this little ship. I'm reminded of the time you introduced me to the M15 and convinced me it was the boat for me, when I thought I wanted an M17. I'm sure I would have happy with a 17 "for awhile", but the extra effort required to rig, launch, retrieve and pack up just doesn't seem to be offset by additional advantages. BTW, I didn't get the url for the website you mentioned in your last post. I'm interested in sculling, but I'm a bit skeptical as to moving the fat little M15 with a yuloh. I made a pair of ten foot oars for my boat. They marginally work and storage is difficult.
