G.O., I liked your rant. I have an even earlier M17, #92 circa 1976. Other than having the pendant replaced, I have had no evidence of swelling trunk, stuck swing keel, or associated problems. Also, I love the earlier M17's as well, with the galley, deep port locker, toerail, and flush hatch. It took me two years of looking in the midwest to find mine (back in 1996). The one feature I do envy on the newer M17's is the wet locker. My rear cockpit scupper drains slowly and the floor does get water on it with 4 adults aboard. But, as the mantra goes, sail what you got, get out on the water. Weather warming up in Minnesota...... Later, Bones

Easy Flush

All, Does anyone know of an easier way of flushing a small 2hp motor without using a trash can? I don't always return home after a sail and I'm looking for a quick and easy method of flushing my motor while traveling. The traditional flush cups are too big and will not fit over the intake hole due to the location of the hole. Has anyone ever tapped the the intake hole and used a small fitting. I was considering using a small male fitting with a gate valve (for adjusting flow) connected to a short tube that connects to a traditional hose fitting. If anyone has an easier, tried and true method, I'd appreciate it if you'd share. "Mini"...no...Micro Hessfest in Havasu

OK..OK...so there were only 2 Hess boats! But we still had fun. An owner of a Balboa 20 brought it to Havasu and we met up for some sailing. Had a great evening on the lake and took some photos. Pulling Dauntless out of the water on 3/31. The local Marina sees fit to raise the rates from $165/month to $350/month for the summer. It's gonna get hot anyway and I have some projects to get completed before the San Juan tri p....but ...I'm still gonna miss being able to run down to the slip and go out for an hour whenever the wind blows!! Wow! This topic drew a lot of responses! Obviously folks are passionate about their Monty's. I guess I would agree with a statement that has already been posted in one of those responses. My opinion would be that a boat, any boat, is worth whatever a person is willing to pay for her. Take me for example. If I was to tell you how much I have invested in Dauntless, our M23, a lot of folks would think that I had a screw loose. And that's saying nothing of all the free labor invested. But, it has been worth it to me as I have wanted to own an M23 since I was a little squirt. Will we ever sell her. Sure we will. Eventually we will probably want to move on up to a Norsea 27 (another Lyle Hess design of course). At that point I will have to put a dollar value on her and then see if anyone else out there thinks that she's worth what I think she's worth. One thing is for sure, though. Many folks will surely not agree that she's worth whatever we will ask for her. And that's OK!!! I hold no ill feelings for those that are shopping for the "deal". Although these "deal shoppers" have taken a few hits, I would guess that many of us, myself included, would jump on any great deal we could find on a Monty in a heartbeat and feel good about being a prudent shopper. Of course, it's always the buyers prerogative, if they don't want to be a "deal shopper" to make the deal to buy the boat and then throw in some extra money over and above the asking price to make everyone feel good! I hope that one of those folks decides they want to buy an M23 when the time comes!!! :-) Now don't get all riled up. I'm just poking a little fun here. I do agree that buying a Monty for a good price is one thing................................contacting an owner that has a boat for sale for a stated price and then knit-picking the boat apart in order to haggle the price down is another. That gets old real quick and is a good way to offend the seller. If I look at a boat and don't agree with the price I may make an offer but I preface it with "I'm not saying that this is what your boat is worth but just that this is what it is worth to me at this point." If the seller wants to know why I will explain my reasoning if not I just thank them for giving me the opportunity to view the boat and move on. I relinquish the soapbox!!!! On another note San Juans is just around the corner!!!!!!!!! Where are we going Larry??? The anticipation is killing us!!!!! woohooo!! Sean PS We just returned from 5 days of scuba diving in Cozumel, Mexico. If you ever get the chance to go there...DO IT! It was fabulous. The diving was like being inserted into a National Geographic video and the people there were awesome. They treated us like kings! Like nothing we have ever done before. My 4hp short shaft is pretty easy to flush in a five gallon paint bucket. Those are pretty much the things I would do or have done. My sails are fine. Cabin cushions are like new. Fiberglass could use a bit of repair for cosmetics mainly (just two dings) and the keel could use some glass repair. No boat cover. No dents in mast, but could use new stays. Needs a boarding ladder. Would like an adjustable motor mount. Motor is okay. No compass. Hatch boards could use some straightening. Wood is good. What's a spot-a-pot? No battery, no bimini, no cockpit cushions. new trailer tires, needs better lights and wiring, just painted trailer. Want to put glides on bunks. (Could use a new trailer.) Basically the boat isn't much improved since I bought it, but not much worse, either. But not selling! Bobbie
