Hi, I just recently bought a Montgomery 17 and towed her home in east central Texas. Usually we have year round sailing here (not to rub it in) but are currently having an ice storm that makes most Texans shake their heads in disbelief. Quite frustrating to a new boat owner as well !!!!!! But milder weather won't be too far away. Plenty of time to surf the net with a hot cup of coffee by my side, looking for upgrades and modifications to be made to the boat. One question I have is about power for accessories- I imagine there are quite a few Montgomery's that have a battery for VHF, lights, accessories and all. This 17 does. A heavy deep cycle battery at that. I was wondering, how do you monitor the state of charge in the battery? My current mode will be to fully charge it at home, then hope to made due on the first multi-day camping trip. Don't intend to run much stuff off of it but it would be nice to have a anchoring light at night, lights to read by, hang some X-mas lights for a festive evening, etc, but don't want to unexpectedly discharge the battery, be able to ration for the weekend. Also, would like to get some sort of solar panel to recharge during the day. Any thoughts or experience with this? Stay warm! George J. Caldwell TX Montgomery 17 #600

The Garmin 478 Marine is out and looks the same as a 276. Made to swap between boat and car. It was released a few months ago and has the g2 charts for all of coastal USA and City Navigator preloaded...but no inland lakes. They also have a 378 Inland and is preloaded with the City Navigator and inland lakes...but no coastal. Both talk, walk and all that jazz. Preloaded charts are a big savings over base units if you are considering purchasing additional charts. The 478 lists around $998 and if it follows the same trend as other units will be down to approx $600 later this year. Dave: On both starboard and port sides of Really's hull near the stern, it says Montgomery Costa Mesa, California. If your boat says made in China you might want to e-mail Jerry again. Actually Really doesn't mind having a twin, even if they didn't come from the same mold. They each have a blue stripe! and that's a good thing. Rich Cottrell

You can use a GPS to find an exact location. Or you can use a GPS to get close and then use your eyeballs. Last year Garmin discontinued the most frugal method of using a GPS for marine navigation. This was the "MapSource Points of Interest CD-ROM". The CD contains four databases of waypoints (not maps) that will load on just about any G product that can be hooked up to a computer. Some are still available on eBay and various discount/discontinued outlets. The features include: * Marine navaids worldwide, and includes lights, buoys, beacons, marinas, mile markers, wrecks, obstructions and hazards for the U.S. * U.S. interstate exit information, such as service stations, hotels, hospitals, restaurants and more. * Locations of services throughout the U.S. and Canada, including food and drink, lodging, entertainment, shopping, banks and much more. * Addresses, phone numbers and descriptions for business listings. http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/poi.jsp These waypoints may be preloaded on some GPS models. In a car, when you are barreling down the interstate and want to know if the next exit has multiple gas stations and restaurants it can show that to you. Maybe the data will be out of date. I am more interested in knowing if I will have a choice of vendors or must deal with a sole proprietor. On the water it shows buoys and other marks. You can follow the buoys if you have a chart, or put a route together before you start. And you need a chart in case the GPS goes out. Your GPS may or may not have a background map that the waypoints can be displayed on. If there is a map, as I have on a larger gps/fish finder, this gives a fairly detailed view. My smaller handheld unit will display the waypoints only, but does not clutter the screen with too much information. I still have a sense of how far I am from buoys or exit ramps. One problem with a GPS, especially a handheld, is there is so much information you have to filter things out to spot what you want. I like both of my GPS units. I can find an address in any of these states in approx. 20+- sec. from a cold start up. Eldor and Dorothy -- I use the Garmin 276c which is a GPS / Chart-plotter. This is Garmin's entry model in their chart-plotter line and it's their only portable one. Being portable, not only can you hard-wire it to your boat/auto but it also runs on rechargeable batt's and has a built on antenna. I sail with it on the SFBAY as well as the California coast. It uses BlueChart chips so you buy the region you want and simply plug the chip in. For me one chip does all of Cali I need. Excellent and outstanding device and absolutly perfect for portability. I highly recommend if you don't want a fixed mount unit. I transition this GPS/Plotter between my boats so I only have to own one device. Presently you can buy it from West Marine bundled with land maps. I will say here however, for land purposes it isn't a great substitute for the Garmin NUVI systems. At best it's a decent substitute on land. But having said that, the NUVI won't do water at all. The bottom line for GPS Chart-plotting is, stick with the water ones for water and the land ones for land. Although I have the 276c I am saving my dollars for the wide-screen NUVI for land use. For land use the 276c does not use "chip" technology but rather, you download via your PC from a disc the areas / roads that you want at any given time. Okay just did a search on WM.com and learned they seemed to have upgraded the 276c up to a 378 and a 478. Not to mention the PRICE!!! I paid about $400+ about 4 years ago.... You might want to see if the upgrades are worth it to you for the price.
