Hi, I just recently bought a Montgomery 17 and towed her home in east central Texas. Usually we have year round sailing here (not to rub it in) but are currently having an ice storm that makes most Texans shake their heads in disbelief. Quite frustrating to a new boat owner as well !!!!!! But milder weather won't be too far away. Plenty of time to surf the net with a hot cup of coffee by my side, looking for upgrades and modifications to be made to the boat. One question I have is about power for accessories- I imagine there are quite a few Montgomery's that have a battery for VHF, lights, accessories and all. This 17 does. A heavy deep cycle battery at that. I was wondering, how do you monitor the state of charge in the battery? My current mode will be to fully charge it at home, then hope to made due on the first multi-day camping trip. Don't intend to run much stuff off of it but it would be nice to have a anchoring light at night, lights to read by, hang some X-mas lights for a festive evening, etc, but don't want to unexpectedly discharge the battery, be able to ration for the weekend. Also, would like to get some sort of solar panel to recharge during the day. Any thoughts or experience with this? Stay warm! George J. Caldwell TX Montgomery 17 #600

I'd like to apologize for the public posting regarding my father's boat. I had originally tried to contact Bob via the company "Contact Us" link, which may have gotten rerouted. I have received a personal reply and update from him. I will add that this boat has a custom interior design, not the standard layout, so it is understood some delays are to be expected with quality construction. As I shared with Bob, this boat is as much for his heart health as it is pleasure and our concern is that getting the boat doesn't add more stress than necessary. I didn't intend for the message to sound angry or insensitive. Just a son's concern. Hopefully, he'll be sailing and posting glowing reports here about sailing the FL coast soon. I'll add that I personally believe that the 17 is the best boat under 20ft you can put in the water and still plan on getting one myself someday. Stacy D. Smith

Greetings. I'm using the owners group site in the hope that I can get a response on behalf of my father, who ordered a Montgomery 17 October 2005, paying in full and receiving about a 4-5 month turnaround estimate, but has not received the boat or a target date for completion. At this point over a year later, it is becoming an awkward subject since I had really pushed the idea of him returning to sailing in a smaller boat, and recommended the Montgomery site to him. He has owned 3 other Lyle Hess designed boats, and knew Lyle and his wife personally. About 20 years ago he and my mother circumnavigated the globe in their BC Cutter, "Small World", so there is a deep respect and reverance for Lyle's designs. We both believe that this is the best 17ft pocket cruiser available, as do most of the owners here it seems. Bob, I realize you monitor the owners group site, as does Jerry M. I didn't receive a response from a direct email, so I'm posting here as a request to please contact my father and simply give him a realistic target date for completion. We both know there are things that hold up production; there is no need to dwell there. At this point, I doubt he would be sailing until later this spring, so any communication at this point would be much appreciated and that gives you some time to work with. Also, I would like some shots of the interior if possible, as he wants me to help finish out some of the woodwork after it arrives. I apologize for the public posting, but it is becoming critical for him to get some word. Thanks for any help you can offer. Stacy D. Smith

M-17 attachment of shroud to spreader tip

Hello: I am working on my rigging. I notice that the shrouds fit into a vertical grove in the tip of the spreader. How is the spreader attached to the shroud so that the shroud would not pop out of, and off of, the spreader if the shroud were to go slack, or when lowering the mast? Jay

Folks, it has been fun and educational; both renovating my M17 and watching and participating on this site. I just returned from California where I purchased a boat I have been watching for a number of years; a Beneteau First 235. It would be nice to keep the M17 and its special traits, but there is just not enough boat bucks to go around, so I have posted the M17 on the MSOG classified. Steve, Our neighbors at my marina in the slip next to me have a First 235 and love it. They are competent sailors and use it in all conditions. Have a blast with your new boat! Bones

How about Bob to date? Tom, To the best of my knowledge, there are 19 M23's, and around 500 M17s and 500 M15s by Jerry's handiwork. Good question Tom, one point though. Scobie mentioned he had "one of the last Jerry boats" an M15 #288 however, my M15 is in the high 400's and she too is a Jerry generation version. Built in 1991. So this is interesting, I wonder if one can consider boats with duplicate hull numbers as twins..! At the very least I guess it makes them special...! Anyone think there could be issues with DMV registration? Seems it could be problematic but maybe not. Last year I switched to the Nikon 8X42 Monarch ATB binoculars. They are affordable birding binoculars. Great to use when anchored out. Rich Cottrell
