North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. Buzzards Bay cruise - synopsis

To:All I just can't say enough about the pleasures of cruising in an M15 :-) The Buzzards Bay cruise was the last week in August. We had 4 M15s and 1 M17 on the cruise. One M17 had to dropout as he had tow vehicle problems on the way to MA. Frank Durant had his brand new M15 and this was the first time it was launched. A real litmus test. Saturday - Sunday - were windy and rainy so we didn't leave harbor till Monday in the rain. Tod smashed his Rudder tooling around the Harbor on Sunday. Great winds and nice sail in the Rain on Monday - Sailed down to Quiset harbor which has a fleet of over 30 Hershoff 15s - all in exquisite condition. Lots of eye candy. 15 lb CQR, 4 M15s and the anchor dragged at high tide. Probably not enough scope. Short downwind sail to Hadley harbor in 20 kts on Tuesday. Picked up one of the free mooring from the Forbes family. Met up with Tod that night. His Ida rudder arrived and was a perfect fit. His self steering worked all the way down the Bay. Wednesday a great sunny sailing day out to Oak Bluffs on Martha's vineyard. Calm night so we stayed rafted up in 24 ft of water - wind kicked up out of the N (a bad direction) around 12:30 AM. We had 200ft of line out with a 15 lb CQR but dragged anyway. A mad scramble to break up the raft. Regrouped in the Morning and with tropical storm Ernesto heading our way we went all of the way to Cuttyhunk on Thursday - averaged 6 knots for 25 NM with a tail wind and favorable current. A nice stay at Cuttyhunk and everyone got out in thier inflatables and hiked around town. The evening forcast confirmed Ernesto was heading our way with 40 kt gusts so on Friday we sailed back to Fairhaven in 18 kt winds, 5 degrees off the wind. Another nice sail with an occasional 5 ft wave. Pulled out Friday PM and had a nice dinner a local seafood restaurant. Typical Buzzards Bay wind strength that required a reef most days. Thanks, Jerry, is that true for a 1985 M15 as well? I'm sure what came with it is larger than 3/16 for the main. That one doesn't matter as much, though, because of the kind of jamming cleat it has (is there some other name for those that I have forgotten?) The jib sheets are slipping through the existing cleats because of wear but they could be 3/8. Bobbie

List activity? and trolling motors

I'm here, but my boat isn't, so not much to report, sadly. (Boat is in Washington, I am in California.) I keep reading Craig's List looking for interesting sailboats (small) but I really don't need another sailboat, I just need to retire and be near the one I have. Though I was thinking about something the other day: around the time I bought my boat I had a book called "Sailing on a Microbudget" or maybe Cruising on a Microbudget? It was about pocket cruisers like the WWP. Anyway, either in there or in SBJ at about the same time, someone wrote about using a trolling motor instead of a gas motor on these boats. I seriously considered it, doing mainly lake sailing at that time. Has anyone on the list tried a trolling motor (and thus battery) in their M15? Bobbie

Hi Doug, I just got on this site and would like to find out that there are M15Âs in New England. IÂm in Meredith NH and have just recently learned about the M15 while doing research on a Com Pac Suncat. Back in the mid 80Âs I kept a boat in Falmouth and am very familiar with that sailing area. Hadley Harbor was our favorite anchorage and we spent many evenings in Cuttyhunk. Having sailed for many years on a much larger boat I finally gave it up about 18 years ago for Rving. I realize that I have to get back on the water, but most importantly I want something that is easy to trailer and rig. I have not been able to see a M15 and wondered if you might be able to help me out. I was almost ready to buy the Suncat, but from what I have read it seems like the M15 is a much better choice.
