montgomery owners: my name is dave scobie and i'm looking at joining your club by purchasing an M15. i've located a boat in the seattle area - hull #288. i've been looking into the history of this boat, as she has been around for 22 years, and see that there are two hulls out there with the same number. so someone has a 'fake' montgomery ... or there is a record keeping issue. the boat is described and pictured at the following www address: http://home.wavecable.com/~ds.seibold/sailboat/sailboat.htm you will notice there is a picture of "Pato's" HIN number (scroll the the bottom of the www page listed above): MMP2880684. besides this number not having the correct number of digits, she is the same hull number as Rich Cottrell's M15 "Really". thoughts on this situation are appreciated. happy sailing. dave scobie *possible M15 owner* __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, I don't know anything about it, but it is not the same boat unless the motor mount was redone (is that an original motor mount on Pato?) and the ladder removed. But it certainly looks like an M15, no fake. Have you had her out for a test sail? Bobbie --

Oh, one other thing. You asked about installing a motor mount or using the cutout. Stick with the cutout. I had the bright idea to put an adjustable mount on the port side and then mount my swim ladder under the cutout so we could use it for easier access. The swim ladder part worked great, but I hated the motor mount. It was awkward to raise and lower (leaning over the transom), you have to remove the motor for trailering, and it changed the trim of the boat. I didn't expect moving the motor back one foot would be that big of a deal, but the boat just didn't feel right. I took it off and sold it. Dear soon-to-be Montgomery owner. Run, do not walk. Get this M-15 I you really do want it. This boat looks very nice. You will hate yourself if you miss getting this one. I would buy it if I was not in the middle of restoring my old hull # 189 with lots more years on it. I have spent a grand just restoring the neglected trailer. My Monty 15 was cheap but the costs of restoring have passed $4450. Best of luck beating out the other buyers out there looking at this same ad. ----L. Hi Bob, Will be glad to do some "hand holding" when you reach that point. The paint I have used on almost all my various boats has been, "International, Brightside One-Part Polyurethane Enamel" See WEST Marine Catalog for details. Pettit Paints has a similar product. The hardest part of the job is the surface preparation. It takes the longest, and after hours of labor, filling and sanding, you still don't have much to show for your work. But then, when all the filling and sanding are completed and the first primer coat is applied, suddenly your boat looks totally different. Maybe a second coat of primer will be required, after lightly sanding the first coat, and then comes the magic moment where you apply the real paint to the surface, and the - till now ugly duckling - turns into a swan, and with the second coat, it becomes a majestic swan. Courage, it's all very doable by just following the instructions (and don't paint with dust flying about - you learn that the hard way too!) Connie

Hi Tod, Sorry to hear that Bilbo has gone to the Happy Hunting Grounds. As one of the family, he'll be sorely missed. He was a good foredeck hand and a good shipmate. Hope you will be able to find a trainable replacement to take his place in the future. Connie

Jeff, I just replaced my outboard this spring and did the same search you're going through. A 4HP is fine for the M17. Yamaha makes a great 4hp 4 stroke that is probably the lightest on the market and has both internal and external gas tanks. Great options for day sailing or cruising. It's a real good motor. But there were 2 downsides in my case. The control arm is mounted off to the side, making it a tight fit in the transom cutout that my older M17 has, and the Yamaha has no charging coil option for battery charging. To solve both those problems, I got a Suzuki 6hp, 4 stroke. They also make a 4hp, but the weight is the same on the 6 and it has the dual tanks. The control arm comes out the front of the motor and they have a 6amp optional charging coil which is really nice for long cruises, especially in areas like the San Juans where there's a fair amount of motoring. There was some talk about a month ago regarding the Windward Skunk, and someone asked me for comments. Someone else suggested that I do a column on the Skunk for SCA. I'd say the 150-something is definitely in the genoa category, and the 109 is the working headsail. Regarding jib tracks, Randy, when you say cabin deck, do you mean on the housetop, or the combing top? I'm not sure the cabintop is a good choice as the broader you reach, the more the shrouds will interfer with the sheet lead. The combing is an option probably...you'll be able to sheet in closer from that position than the toe rail. Hi Bob, International Paint Company has booklets on how to refinish a hull using their products, which you can obtain at WEST stores, or by calling International Paint Company. I have refinished a 29 foot hull using a two part epoxy paint; a 16 foot ComPac, and various boats I built, using a brushable International paint. Going the brushable route with one component paint is the easier way to go. It is not as finnicky. If you get some runs and sags in the paint job, don't despair. From 10 feet away you'll never see it. Your hull will be shiny and pretty - and that's your ultimate aim. The first time you do it is the hardest, because it is all new territory, and you have to go through the "learning curve" but it is not that hard to do. Give it a try. The key to doing a good job is your surface preparation. All cracks, dings, scratches have to be filled and sanded till you can't feel a thing when you run your fingers over the surface. (your fingers will pick up things your eyes don't see) Then, with a smooth hull, you can start the painting process; a primer coat plus at least two finish coats. Connie ex LEPPO M15
