North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. Centerboard

Lets not forget that the older pre 1987 M_15s had steel shot for ballast. While most of these boats are fine, a number of them had (over the years) water intrude into the keel and start rusting the steel shot. As the steel rusts, the keel swells up and squeezes the centerboard. All M_15 centerboards pre 1987 also were fiberglass with steel shot inside. These also could swell up over the years and get stuck in the up position. The weight of all these fiberglass/steel shot boards was close to 45 pounds. Never more than about 47 pounds. All the M_boats after 1987, both in the 15 and 17 have lead instead of steel for ballast material inside the keel and inside the 45 pound centerboard. I doubt that Tom has dirt holding the board up. More likely the board, keel trunk or both has swelled up and is now stuck. Same for you Jim. Once you get the board out it has to be made thinner so it won't be sticky. Boom Vang

Thanks George, That aluminum tubing is a good idea. I'll dig through my junk to see if I can't come up with something like that. Just yesterday, I was thinking of using the barrel of a sail stop (you know, like Dwyer sells, with the thumb nut) as a base to mount something to. It's still an option. I also like that vang key assembly idea. I like the clean look. But how about the key? On the Dwyer site they state , "Accepts ball swaged on 1/8" wire.", but they don't show any balls or keys. Does the vang key assembly come with a key? Your suggestion seems to indicate that it does. I wonder if the vang key assembly would be a good solution for the mast end? Again, it's clean and bridges the sail slot gap nicely. Boom Vang

George, On second thought, I can see that the vang key assembly would not be a good idea for the mast end of the vang. Besides wanting to fall down and out of the slot, the vang should probably be hooked hard to the boat at least at one end or it will eventually end up in the drink. Rick

Internet Explorer

Hi All, I just figured out something - - Recently, I've been using G-Mail and Internet Explorer. Using IE has brought out some issues for the Photo Site. First, when you have "favorites" open, the window size drops down to 800 X 600. Which means, when you look at the site, the pics and copy may be bunched up. The fix for this is to close the favorites area. When you do, the screen size once again becomes 1024 X 768. Which is what we need for the site. This revelation is probably well understood by many, however, it's a first for me so I thought I'd pass it along. I remember there was one or two individuals who said the photos and copy overlapped on some pages. If you've got your monitor set to 1024 X 768, it still could be the case until you close the "Favorites" if you use IE. Bill www.msogphotosite.com M-15 on order

Center board trunk and keel question

All, I have a 1981 M-15 that I bought last summer. I was working on preping the hull for some paint when I noticed something curious about the center board trunk and keel. It appears to me that the bottom of the keel (fiberglass) has separated from the center board trunk liner. There is about a quarter inch gap running on each side of where the glass at the bottom of the keel appears like it should meet the center board trunk liner. The gap is not there at the back or front, but curiously it does not appear to me like the bottom of the keel fiberglass is displaced a quarter inch like I might have expected if the glass let loose. I do not store the boat in the water so I do not know if this is letting water in or not. I have not noticed a problem when sailing. Can those familiar with the keel/centerboard liner joint help me understand what should be there and if this is broken as I assume offer some advice on repairing it? Thanks Robbin M-15 in VA

I wish I could race my Lil' Flushdeck, but here in my local waters (Santa monica bay) they disallow anything under 20 ft for PHRF races. But it's nice to know what my rating would be if ever I were allowed into a race. I've heard of Portsmouth ratings but in all my years of racing I never seen them used, at least not around here. Good Info. Hey Jerry! is the PHRF rating of 300 good for the Flushdeck as well? M17 handicap?

Gary, Here in Havasu, when we were racing #313 they were handicapping us at 300. The better it blows the bigger advantage we seemed to enjoy! Sean
