North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. Centerboard

Lets not forget that the older pre 1987 M_15s had steel shot for ballast. While most of these boats are fine, a number of them had (over the years) water intrude into the keel and start rusting the steel shot. As the steel rusts, the keel swells up and squeezes the centerboard. All M_15 centerboards pre 1987 also were fiberglass with steel shot inside. These also could swell up over the years and get stuck in the up position. The weight of all these fiberglass/steel shot boards was close to 45 pounds. Never more than about 47 pounds. All the M_boats after 1987, both in the 15 and 17 have lead instead of steel for ballast material inside the keel and inside the 45 pound centerboard. I doubt that Tom has dirt holding the board up. More likely the board, keel trunk or both has swelled up and is now stuck. Same for you Jim. Once you get the board out it has to be made thinner so it won't be sticky. Removeable hatch

I was crouching in the cabin and quite by accident raised up and the hatch popped up. I had been so preoccupied with getting things fixed up on the boat in the 6 months that I owned her that I never realized that the notches in the hatch slides mated up with like notches in the companionway hatch that would allow it to be completely removed. Now the standing head room I was looking for when I found the boat is there-sort of! Jerry was way ahead of Hunter and Catalina on this one! I see the newer models do not have this feature. Hi to the group - new M17 owner in Connecticut

Thought I'd write to introduce myself - have been enjoying the list since October, when I went down to Annapolis and met Bob E. and Walt (Walt is an M17 owner from the DC area), who brought his M17 to show. I had gone down to Annapolis thinking about a different boat, but was really taken by the Montgomery, which I had only seen on the 'net before that. Walt's boat was in fine shape, and Bob was installing a new boom vang while we talked, so I got a great lesson in the boat's construction and characteristics. Walt generously offered a sail if I could drive back down to Annapolis later in the month, so I took him up on it and we spent a fine afternoon in a pretty good breeze in an area about 10 mi south of there. I was hooked! The boat handled much better than similar-sized boats that I had sailed, with barely no hull pounding and flexing, and we zipped along quite a bit more quickly than I would have guessed. After that, Bob made sorting out the details very easy, and he tells me he's just about done with Lily (for my 3-year old daughter) - I can't wait. I've been a sailor for 20 years, but never a boat owner. Thus, I'm confused about lots of things. The Boss has vetoed back-yard boat work, so a local shop will do the epoxy barrier coat and bottom paint when Lily gets here. Anyone who wants to share advice about products to choose or avoid, and more than that, some guidance on what I might expect for reasonable quotes from the yard for this work, can contact me - much appreciated. I'll keep the list posted as things progress, and will advertise "arrival day" and "launch day" when I have one. Anyone within driving range who wants to come down to the area (the boat will be at a marina in New London, CT) to help with first-sail jitters is more than welcome! La-Z Boy and bow roller

Hey Todd, I finally got around to copying your idea for the "La Z Boy. I had some surplus high density shipping foam from work. I took the electric knife out to the boat and cut it to size and the basic contour of the floor. The preliminary fit was great and it really made spending a night, sitting in the berth very comfortable. Now that the experiment worked, I will upholster it when I redo the rest of the cushions. Thanks for the idea. I hope I don't owe you any royalties?? I see in several pictures of Busca Brisas on your web site what looks like a bow roller. Re: M_Boats: soft covers/caps for nuts

My solution has been to use small plywood "washers" and T-nuts. The plywood washers are to spread out the load, same as a fender washer, and to give the t-nut something to bite into besides the cabin top. I confess that I've only used this on wooden boats, but it works. Who wants to scrape their skull on a protruding nut, anyhow? 1"x1"x 1/4" makes a nice washer. I use a cheapo Black & Decker belt sander to clean them up. It has an attachment that allows it to be clamped to a workbench upside down for such things. The London Bridge Yacht Club is hosting the first in a series of trophy races this morning on Lake Havasu. Time of start first gun is 12pm. Starting area (usually) is on Thompson Bay which just so happens to be right in front of the webcam! No Montys in the race today. Obviously Dauntless would proceed directly to the bottom and Jason's 17 will be tucked away in his slip as he is unable to make the race. Probably 5 or 6 local boats, nothing big but we have fun. Your's truly will be assisting the comittee setting marks. Look for a large flybridge powerboat as the main comitte boat. Forecast....mind you now, I said the forecast! is for 10-15knts.
