North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. Centerboard

Lets not forget that the older pre 1987 M_15s had steel shot for ballast. While most of these boats are fine, a number of them had (over the years) water intrude into the keel and start rusting the steel shot. As the steel rusts, the keel swells up and squeezes the centerboard. All M_15 centerboards pre 1987 also were fiberglass with steel shot inside. These also could swell up over the years and get stuck in the up position. The weight of all these fiberglass/steel shot boards was close to 45 pounds. Never more than about 47 pounds. All the M_boats after 1987, both in the 15 and 17 have lead instead of steel for ballast material inside the keel and inside the 45 pound centerboard. I doubt that Tom has dirt holding the board up. More likely the board, keel trunk or both has swelled up and is now stuck. Same for you Jim. Once you get the board out it has to be made thinner so it won't be sticky. (sand smooth and carefully remove some of the material on the fat part). We use nothing but pure lead. No rust, no swelling. Fair winds Bob (949) 489-8227 Robert Eeg bobeeg(a)earthlink.net Why Wait? M17 'Hydeaway 2" ready to sail

Just wanted to say that in my opinion Bob Eeg builds a fine boat and is a nice guy. And Alezondo (sp?) does great work and does it fast! My friend Bob Thornton and I picked up my new M17 on Nov 1, 2005 at Bob's shop in Ontario, CA. --pictures at this web address: http://homepage.mac.com/gmhyde1/PhotoAlbum8.html I would do business with Bob again with no hesitation. He helped me choose components and provided wiring design information so that I could and did do the major wiring in the boat. He provided some nice extras and was very helpful in may ways. Hydeaway 2 is pretty much ready to sail now. The woodwork is finished, wiring is all done, the stove, GPS, depth sounder, solar panel, and sail handling hardware are all installed, and I even took it sailing for the first time on the Snake River on 4 Jan 2006. Weather was nearly 50°F. If we weren't going to Tahiti next week I'd be tempted to hitch onto it and head south until I found a warm place to sail some more! How about genetically engineered interluxe eating microbes? The R&D would be high, but the satisfaction and potential royalties could be huge. ;^) I'd try stripping it first. What have you got to lose? Would a heat gun be effective? Good luck. Tis a noble goal you're pursuing. Inspired by Bills site....and by no means trying to compete with it!!! Bills site is awesome! We have started a Funtigo site to play around with for the local Montgomerys here in Lake Havasu, AZ. It's just a trial thing and we're just getting started. hoping to convince some of the other locals that we need more Monty's here. There used to be many....then there were none. Toe rail refurburbishment

Just thought I would throw a problem out there to the "collective mind" and see if I can solicit some ideas. I have brought M23 #017 home from the glass shop after having her topsides and transom regelcoated. Now the work really begins as I must fine-sand and buff all if it to bring it up to "snuff." I also must reattach the toe rail with it's million stainless nuts and bolts. I like the idea that Tom puts forward to powder coat but I don't kow what prep would be involved. It really it ought not be too tough to use a gel stripper and a wire brush to whisk off the residue. I don't like the gel stuff much because of cleanup, but for this application, it would work pretty well. Make sure you get the gel in the holes and use a round brush (like a test tube brush, except wire--I'm sure somebody makes one) to run the paint outo of there.
