North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. Busca's NEW Cushions

I'm pretty pleased with how Busca's new cushions have turned out. The extra inch of thickness should make for some GOOD sleeping, as between that and the fact that the foam is 18 yrs newer I no longer bottom out. Jerry must've used the GOOD Quality foam for them to last that long. And the covers were just BEGINNING to show wear (probably mostly because of 80# dog toenails!). An indelicate subject

Hi all: I know this particular topic is a little gross, but I'd like to hear more about other folks' solutions to the head problem as well. I've been trying to come up with something for my boat that would be similar to a very small composting toilet. I've read a little bit of The Humanure Handbook (available online, I think) and it seems that it's possible, but needs experimentation (yech!) to see if one can make or adapt a sawdust toilet for boat use. A sawdust toilet is commonly used in no-septic cabins. It's just a 5-gal bucket. As long as deposits are covered with sawdust, peat moss, rotted leaves, or other nitrogen-rich cover it doesn't smell. I would guess they mean it doesn't smell THAT bad, as sleeping with my head two inches away from a bucket full of rotten leaves and poop has got to have some sort of smell. According to the book, if the contents are heated to 140 degrees, pathogens are killed and it's safe to bury. It seems to get almost that hot in my car when the windows are rolled up...maybe some kind of black bucket with a glass or plexi top? Still, I think I may opt for some heavy-duty plastic bags and a clandestine trip to a dumpster whenever possible. On commercial composting heads (about $1200!) there's some kind of way to divert urine into a separate container. A teaspoon of sugar added to this reportedly gets rid of odors from urine. My M17 came with with a head that really isn't much more than a glorified bucket with a toilet seat on top. I might try to modify that somehow. Has anyone else though about this a lot, or should I seek counseling? Good gracious. Peeing in the lake David? Does Bill know about this? I have to believe dropping solid waste in a lake is a no-no about everywhere. Open ocean--different story. I almost convinced Larry Yake a couple of times the M15 is faster than the M17--matter of fact, in very light winds I believe it is. Not when it starts to blow, however. Now, could Jerry in an M15 beat me in an M17? Hi Gang, While we're on this subject, let me add a laugh for the day. When we had our Tripp-Lentsch on the Chiemsee in Southern Germany, our direct toilet discharge into a lovely pristine mountain lake bothered me. In those days, The Raritan Company made a Macerater / Chlorinator to hang on the output side of the toilet which emulsified and added chlorine and had a holding tank to allow chemistry to function, before sending the result overboard. Great solution said I, and ordered one from Raritan, who sent it to Munich, Germany by air freight. Now I had to fill out German Customs paper work to import it into the country. I went to their office and went through all their categories of products looking for a good product number to fill in on my Customs Form, which I then had to take to the Airport and hand to the Customs Agent. Not finding anything like a macerator / chlorinator listed, I was forced to pick a number - any number - just to get a stamp on my Customs Import papers. Then it was off to the Airport. I got a very young Customs Inspector. We opened the wooden crate, and there it was: a white rectangular plastic box, with various pipe connection plugs around the outside, and an electric motor sticking out on top. I explained what it was used for, which only caused wrinkles on the Customs agent's forehead. Finally he departed, leaving me standing there with my white plastic box. A few minutes later he returned with his boss. He asked me to give him the explanation again, which I did. This is hooked up to a marine toilet, I said, when you flush the toilet, what was in the toilet bowl goes into the first chamber of this white box. Then you press the button and the electric motor chops everything up and adds chlorine. It sits there and is sanitized. With the next toilet use, what was in compartment No.1 goes to compartment No. 2, while the new arrival is processed in compartment No. 1 again. As I explained it: when you press the button, the motor starts and inside the box, the music goes round and round.... He stood there for a moment, then turned to the young Customs Inspector and said, ..... Simple! It's a food processor accessory, and is Category 325175, with a 5% duty; ....turned and walked away. I paid my 5% duty, grabbed my Raritan Macerater / Chlorinater and took off........ So now you know: German Customs says we're talking about a food processor accessory! Connie

trailer tires

Back in the late 90's we discussed trailer tires for the M15. It was suggested that radial tires are as good a bias tires, give a smoother ride and are less expensive. I purchased three 145 12" radials at Sears for $ 14. each. After many happy miles one of the tires blew while towing to Lake Don Pedro this past week just outside of Modesto. I'm having a heck of a time finding 12" radials. Are they still available? Can you tow with one bias and one radial? There's a M15 and a M17 listed for sale in this month's issue of Latitude 38.
